Miami Valley Hospital - 4S ICU

There really is no single story that can really adequately show how this nurse demonstrates high quality nursing practice because it is so ingrained as part of her character. She constantly goes out of her way to meet the needs of patients and their families, keeping them aware of what is happening in their care. Only a few weeks ago, this nurse took care of a young man who suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, eventually resulting in brain death. To complicate matters, the patient was Vietnamese and his family only understood very limited English. She collaborated with the translator and physician to try and explain this very tragic event to the family and support them in anyway she could. One of these ways was to help honor the patients Buddhist faith by ensuring that the body was left alone for 8 hours following death and to allow their clergy to assist the family with chants and prayers. There were several friends and family who needed to be present for this ceremony and this nurse made sure that they were allowed to carry out these rites in accordance with their beliefs. Not only did she have to overcome a language and cultural barrier, but she quickly learned about and honored this patient’s religious belief. I really think this kind of nursing should be applauded and celebrated.
