Push the envelope to gain an edge after an interview

How many times have you walked away from a job interview bursting with optimism only never to be called back? It's happened to most everyone.

Staying in the hunt and ultimately converting a job interview into an offer requires specific post-interview actions that sustain the chemistry of the meeting and not allow the positive impression you established to fade with time.

As a rule, the job interview process does not end with the event itself. If executed properly, a letter sent to the employer represents one of the most effective tools in sealing a job opportunity after the meeting. Unfortunately, a number of job candidates don't bother to follow interviews with any letter, which may explain why they struggle with their job search.

The interest and contribution letter communicates exactly that. It's a customized form of the conventional thank-you letter, but one that affirms to the employer your enthusiasm for the job and the organization, especially after learning further details during the interview. This message must convey sincerity and not be perceived as apple-polishing.

The letter registers its most dynamic impact when it demonstrates your fit for the position and the value you bring, citing how your skills can contribute to the objectives of the organization. Avoid platitudes. Focus your comments on needs the hiring manager expressed. Select a couple of the items that were discussed and describe how your skills and experience could contribute in these areas. Give examples of where you successfully performed in these capacities and the results achieved.

The letter keeps you remembered and maintains your presence with the employer while the selection process continues. You can assume an even more proactive role by indicating you will call the following week to review the information in more detail and discuss the possible next step.

Pushing the envelope helps you gain an edge on your competition and strategically positions you for a potential job offer.
