MASON — Visitors to Kings Island can see the amusement park is building a ride that park managers refuse to discuss except to say that it will open in 2009.

But drawings Kings Island filed with the city of Mason Planning Department provide new clues about the ride they've tried to hide:

The plans describe a coaster 4,200 feet long, based on scale drawings. It will span from just behind International Street and the Eiffel Tower and over the Rivertown area, between The Crypt and Potato Works and over into what appears to be a wooded area.

It will be smaller than The Beast, which is 7,400 feet long, and bigger than the Vortex, which is 3,800 feet long.

Plans show that each train on the new ride holds 32 people in eight attached cars. The track appears to run over a water feature near the end of the ride.

The ride is designed by Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard and it is listed as a "hypercoaster," according to the plans filed with the city of Mason.

A photo on the Swiss company's Web site for "hypercoaster" characterizes the ride as having "height, speed and airtime." The water feature was not shown.

Kings Island's drawings filed with the city of Mason also indicate three loops.

Neither representatives of Kings Island nor its Swiss ride manufacurer could be reached for comment on Tuesday, July 8.

Detailed drawings of the ride itself were not submitted to Mason, since the city only has oversight over the design and construction of a building where riders will depart and return. Inspection of amusement park rides falls under the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

However, state officials are not privy to design details about the new ride, either.

Bill Schwaderer, a spokesman for the agriculture department, said the amusement park industry uses standards developed by the American Society of Testing & Materials. The state does not review or approve ride designs before construction.

"We look at the records and certifications that this ride has met the ASTM standards," Schwaderer said. "A lot of those rides are proprietary and they won't let anyone know anything. You can't see the engineering stuff on it, it's all copyrighted. They don't want anyone to find out what their secrets are. Even for us, we just see the certifications."

Len Morrissey, ASTM staff manager for amusement park rides, said most manufacturers follow the ASTM standards for design, G-force, acceleration and restraint and safety systems.

"You can sort of self certify, but there isn't some sort a watchdog out there that checks it, unless there is an incident or something like that," Morrissey said.

I’m really glad to see that Cedar Fair has bought this park. I love Cedar Point the most although it is 5 hours away. Kings Island is only 100 miles from me and I am glad to hear of the New Ride. I was at Kings Island just the other week and noticed the construction. Kings Island really needs some very large coasters made of steel and glad the new one will be made that way. I would like to see more coasters over 300’ tall and less wooden coasters.

I heard that the Behemoth that they just opened at their Toronto park was what’s coming in 2009:

I’m excited whenever a park gets a B&M, and they’ve got hypers down to a science. I’m positive it will be a crowd pleaser. Like always, unfortunately, it’s probably gonna have that B&M characteristic block brake and numerous trims. I just hope they won’t be set to grad the fins much.

Kings Dominion isn’t as run down as some would think & is far better than Six Flags America….I’ve heard that KD’s been so busy lately that they’ve had to turn people away at the gates.

Cedar Fair is doing a good job of managing their new parks,I can hardly wait to ride Dominator for the first time in about two weeks from now & from what I hear that KD may be adding something big of it’s own for 2010.Anyway congrats on the new hyper for 09.

i’m also glad that you can once again drink throughout the whole park, instead of having designated beer gardens or whatever. yay for cedar fair adding cool rollercoasters. i was pissed off when paramount took out the king cobra. delerium is fun, but it’s no rollercoaster. keep up the good work, cedar fair, keep making those awesome coasters that we all love.

so wow, i cannot wait for this new hypercoaster to be put it. i’m so glad that cedar fair bought king’s island, now they can start building cool rides again. paramount sucked. I’m glad to see that they changed all the names of the rides to cool names, instead of the names of stupid paramount films. one thing i AM disappointed in is that they changed the racers to their origional ways, both going forward instead of one going backwards and the other forward. I think this will be a very good addition to King’s Island. I agree with several posters that Paramount sort of “rested on their laurels,” reinvesting little in the park over the years… and it showed… let’s hope Cedar Fair does a good job and makes it a treasure for everyone to enjoy.

I’ve spent almost 25 years in public service (name and associated email are pseudonyms). I have learned over that time that people (as a whole) are far more likely to say something negative than something positive. I THINK this has something to do with feeling positive comments are unnecessarily supportive of a good thing that is already in place. As a result, many great efforts have been brought down by a few whiners’ negative remarks. These writings are one more example of this ugly habit.

To those who think the park maintenance is lacking. If you only knew the truth about Paramount. They bled the parks dry for the money and invested very little back. Paramount cut every corner they could and had no clue what they were doing when it came to running a park. Cedar Fair has made great strides in improving the park. The “run-down” of the park didn’t happen overnight and neither can it’s rebuilding. Give them some time.

I think 4’200 is a bit short meaning the coaster will most likely have a lot of trim brakes and a Mid Course Brake run, or it will be close to a junior hyper maybe 205 feet tall instead of the usual B&M 230 foot mark or hypers.

If Kings Island has become as run down as Kings Dominion has, CF has it’s hands full. What once was the premire park has seriously let itself go.

Wow! So much to comment on.

Hypercoaster: Great! Exciting! As a coaster enthusiast (175 coasters, thousands upon thousands of rides), I can not wait! M&B is at the top of roller coaster design and construction - I haven’t ridden one I did not like. Comfortable. Smooth.

Kings Island Maintenance: As a season pass holder for more than 20 consecutive years and a regular visitor to the park, I can tell you that the park’s up keep has improved since CF bought the park two years ago.

I think the point that these people are trying to get through is; there are so many problems facing the region and DDN has the power to reach the audience that can demand action.

Now for a response to the article. R & D is important but this management team at KI has a serious problem the quality from hotdogs to maintenance is lacking seriously, before investing in new fixtures they need to take a look at the overall park and get things in order. Paramount was much more adept at this.

Hey, no one died in the making of this news article. That’s great. Or would you rather hear about which hollywood bimbo did what, a drive-by shooting or a how bad the economy is. This is a good thing for the area and while it was not bad news, it is news.

The people that are complaining here need to get over themselves. Some of us actually think that this is exciting news. There are plenty of things on the evening news that I might consider “fluff” but I don’t call in bitching every night asking why it was on there.

I visited KI last weekend for the first time in several years. I was shocked at the apparant lack of up keep, from the worn parking lot to all most every building in need of paint. It makes me wonder how well the rides are maintained.

Bobby, comment about the topic? Well, I have read the commentary that individuals are posting about the topic, and that is they find the speculatory news “un-newsworthy”. Of course you like the article, when you work for Cox, you find all these really dumb “Comment” sections fascinating. How about tomorrow we have Cox write an article on The Jug’s 1/3 lb cheeseburger with blue cheese inserted in it, with a brine baste for 24 hrs before grilling? Or, man pushes string up a hill?

I’m tired of people being so critical about every piece of journalism that doesn’t fall under the category of “important news.” If anything it is these posts that make reading comments crappy, talk about the TOPIC not how good or bad it is! To some, more details about a new ride at an amusement park is important to them!

Thank you to all the people that have posted logical comments ABOUT the new coaster. I for one am happy that it will be a steel hypercoaster, it will be a very nice addition.

I was shock That King Island will be world’s first and record breaking hypercoaster with loops never see before. Not funny for KI will become Pro Parks!

By Maia

July 8, 2008 9:34 PM | Link to this

A B&M “hypercoaster” typically means a roller coaster taller than 200ft. And part of me wonders if those three “loops” aren’t really just three helices. Turn a stretch of track on it’s side, make it go in a circle, and people freak out about it going upside down when it really doesn’t.

What do we think—-about what. That you are speculating on a new coaster King’s Island is putting in? My, what a loss of journalism. Gather enough snippets about roller coasters, add a dose of speculation, and we ave this. I’m only even responding because the DDN, Cox, is SO SO SO very bad at quality reporting.

How is this not news? Would you rather hear about a drive by shooting, an NFL player arrested again, or how gas prices are going up? This is good for the region. I really can’t believe how some people are just never happy…

Actualy, John, I appreciate that this has been reported. Many coaster fans have been speculating for a while about what exactly is being built. And now we know more than we did before. So I’d hardly consider this poor journalism. Any reason why you felt the need to be so critical?
