Rally leaves crowd charged about McCain, Palin

Comment: What did you think of the rally?

More from the rally:

LEBANON — While Arizona Sen. John McCain was the headliner on this ticket, it is clear his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was a major draw today at the rally in Lebanon.

"Why are we here?" said Bill of Milford. "One word: Sarah."

His wife, Lucille, agreed. "She is the first candidate that is the whole package," she said. "She can relate to me as a woman, as a mom and as a person who shares my beliefs and morals."

Nearly 10,000 people showed up to see McCain and Palin speak at the Golden Lamb in Lebanon this morning, Sept. 9, the Secret Service estimated.

People gathering to get a bite to eat after the rally were still charged up after the event.

Sheri Beck, 43, of Mason, a mother of three children, that she "thought the event went very well. I've never felt more passionate about voting. Up until now, it's been about voting because you're part of a party, but now I feel a personal passion about voting."

Julie Fennessey of Lebanon: "It was phenomenal. I shook hands with McCain and got Palin's autograph." She and her party went through security and were hand selected by secret service to be in a small group right near the stage.

Palin was a big draw for her because she represents the working mom.

"Honestly, when the announcement was made, I did struggle some with the fact of her being a mom and balancing it all. But, as I listened to her today, I am leaning more toward the fact that she can handle it. She represents such a large group of women —that makes her so real," Fennessey said.

In a campaign where change is a major buzzword, both Bill and Lucille said the McCain/Palin ticket offers something different than the status quo.

"They are people of their word," Wemsley said. "And, they are real. People are just plain tired of sending representatives to Washington that don't represent them. With McCain/Palin, we finally have people who represent us."

Palin's popularity is not only vocal, but in dollars spent. Campaign buttons with her picture or in support of her are flying off of concession stands around the rally area. "I'm selling my last two, You Go Girl buttons,"said one of the vendors as people crowded her display.

"She brings an excitement to the ticket," said Mike Burleson of Blanchester, who came down to the rally with his wife, Kathy. "I just want to see them in person and hear what they have to say."

Many women in the crowd are saying that they want to be here to witness history. Roxanne Barden of Fairfield came with her mother-in-law, future sister-in-law and some friends.

"I wanted to come show my support for John McCain and Sarah Palin and to help anyway I can to get them elected, Barden said.

Barden cited Palin's efforts in Alaska to help make government work more transparent. "I love the way that she put Alaska's government checkbook online — that is a great thing."

Many women said they didn't necessarily relate to Palin because she is a mother, but the fact that she is a woman who is intelligent and well-spoken.

"Washington insiders are scared because it is so different," Barden said.

A small crowd gathered inside of Whit's Frozen Custard to escape the rain and to grab a quick bite to eat before the main event starts. As people waited in line, there was much discussion on the event, the issues and the ticket, in general.

Frankin High School graduate Brandon Marshall is participating in his first election and decided that it was a good idea to come down and see the candidates first hand.

"I'm a Republican and I want to show my support," he said.

Pat Teeters, originally from Middletown said Palin won her over after the convention. "I said, 'baby, you've got me,'" Teeters said. "She is no-nonsense and that's what I want my candidates to be."

Marcella Churchill, another Middletown resident, said she has supported McCain since the primaries because of his stance on national security. Her son, Keith, is a corporal in the U.S, Marines and left on July 24, for his second tour of duty in Iraq.

"I like that they (McCain/Palin) are not afraid to buck the system and don't always run on party lines. And, Palin is my age and she is a working mother. I think that people make such a big deal out of her being a woman, being a mom, because this is something totally new on this level —we've never seen it before."

Churchill said all of the talk about Palin's family and issues being a distraction is "something every working mother has to deal with every day and that is one of the things that makes her relatable to the people."

One more thing-“I was there”-It is obvious that Palin is a vindictive little snake in the grass, that,on the surface, presents herself as a sweet little small town “librarian” type girl, who just wants what is best for the “family”.She has”family values”don’t you know.In truth, under the facade, she has already demonstrated that she is the Repubs female Dick Cheney,a ruthless little tyrant, who will step on anyone and anything,to get her way. Sad part about all this-the stupid media is buying it.

Palin probably does well as a mother,a wife and a small town politician, but she’s not ready for prime time. She wants to come across as this religious do-gooder-family woman thing while,at the same time, we hear where she fires people left and right because they “disagree” with her policies. Then,as if it’s something special,it is revealed that she decided to keep her newborn with problems,as if to insinuate that she is something special and that other people haven’t done this before. What crap.

To”I was there”-and exactly what is Palin’s experience that makes her ready for the VP position? She was a city commissioner, mayor and a governor and she started her political career”in what,1996? Don’t talk to me about an experienced candidate, when you damn Repubs have one on the ticket also. Obama a puppet? How about your little Johnny McCain hugging and kissing up to Bush after being crapped on by Bush?Talk about a stooge for the party! That’s McCain-Bush’s lacky. No,Palin’s not VP material.

What is it that I’m not getting here people? & 3/4 years of Gop and we’ve been driven right into the toilet. Where have all these people who are supporting McSame/Palin been in a coma for the 7 3/4 years? Do they not know what the price of gas, groceries and everyday living has gone to for the middle class? I mean come on people what are you smoking?

Sen Barb Boxer-In the 16 years that we have served together in the Senate, I have seen John McCain fight. I have seen him fight against raising the federal minimum wage 14 times. I have seen him fight against making sure that women earn equal pay for equal work. I have seen him fight against a women’s right to choose so consistently that he received a zero percent vote rating from pro-choice organizations. I have seen him fight against helping families gain access to birth control.

Contempt For Those Who Serve. Last week’s Republican convention sure made every superficial effort to come off as pro-Troop and pro-Veteran. And, of course, the media ate it up, not challenging a single thing. But to those of us who did serve, it was offense after offense after offense. Maybe because it’s because he has a terrible record, but not once in John McCain’s speech did he talk about taking care of those who served their nation in the military.

I know that this must be America, because some of the comments I read are not like mine.

I too still believe in The “greatest liberal” of all, time (Jesus Christ), the same one who called Zacheaus the (hated) tax collector down from the tree, and spent the night at his house..in total disregard to what others were thinking and saying.

His example is worth remembering.

Student: “Unfair taxing” as in his tax CUTS which Hussein Obama is trying to eliminate (although he’s now “changing his mind, and will wait until the economy recovers”)?? Our military is voluntary. My father is retired military, and I’m a military brat. I don’t hear the soldiers, Marines, et al complaining. You can bet that if one did, the “news” media would be interviewing them on every channel. We’re winning over there, which is why the media is ignoring it. StopLoss is in every contract

Name the last thing that any Democrat has accomplished. Seriously. They get up there, feed you the same lines, make sure the Union folks vote for them, then send the Union jobs overseas. Pelosi promised change “in 48 hours”, and as of today, hasn’t accomplished anything meaningful (except naming libraries and post offices, instead of working on lowering fuel prices/ increasing supply). I won’t change your mind, you won’t change mine. I dwell on facts, you ignore them. Dems weaken the USA.

VietVet and BW: Still believing the Democrat lies of the past 30 years. 143 days in the Senate, and voting “present” on over 130 issues do not qualify one for the Presidency. Obama is a puppet if I’ve ever seen one. If he’s stammering, he’s trying to keep his lies straight. He can’t even order a Happy Meal without someone telling him what to say. Palins acceptance speech was done almost entirely from memory, as the teleprompter malfunctioned shortly into her “speech”. Continued…

Socialism doesn’t work. Never has, never will. Your teachers who make you watch “An Inconvenient Truth” are filling your head with garbage. As a student of lebanon high school i have to say i am concerned. Although i find Mccain a better candidate than Obama, i find both of them uneducated of what america really needs. Our former president/present president George Bush has run this country into the ground with unfair taxing and by placing our family/friends in iraq to fight and risk their lives for his safety. I think that Hilary clinton would have been a better candidate because her husband Bill has done all of this before.

When you see the coverage of Obama vs. McCain in Ohio by the DDN you just need to realize that “The Dayton Daily News” is owned and operated by The Cox Broadcasting Corp. owner of The “left leaning”’ Atlanta Constituion and numerous radio stations. It kills the DDN staff to even report that McCain/Palin were in the Dayton area. I think their declining newspaper subscribers is indicative of this bias. Maybe they will go finacially bankrupt and do us all a favior!

I think President Bush has done a great job! We have been safe since 9/11, but many don’t recognize this and give President Bush this credit. Freedom isn’t free people and yet so many have forgotten this! My vote is for a man who has experience and that is John McCain. Obama frightens me with his lack of experience. As for Palin’s record, ask yourself if you have a picture perfect life? I don’t think one person can say they do!!!

EXCEPT, anyone who is proud of what we have put in the white house the last 8 years must be out of their frigging minds. Did anyone notice there were THREE “glowing” headlines for Obama….and 1 simple, fractured sentence for McCain…. “McCain, Palin speak to thousands at Lebanon rally” WOW DDN….you really went out of your way to offer BOTH sides without bias. (Insert sarcasim here…) And one more thing…..I found it amazing that during the Republican Convention people felt the need to interupt, and disrupt while folks were speaking…..how rude. Didn’t see anyone doing THAT during Obamas speech!

FactGuy- Security doesn’t mean continuing a war that can’t be won and is draining our finacial resources. The war is another Vietnam in many ways. When we do leave, it won’t be long before Al Quiada overruns the Iraqui government/military trained by us, just like Nam. In ten years, we will build a wall, place thousands of names on that wall and wonder what it was all about, JUST LIKE NAM. We don’t learn through past mistakes very well.Corporations-not necesarily the working man’s friend.

Levies have been passed to give Price the money to improve. He has failed. Those are facts. The city-disagree-not run by unions- run by incompetent council members, city manager, and city department heads who are non union members and not affliated with a particular political party, although, I would guess, all mostly Republicans if asked.

While a Senator, he voted with Bush on 90% of Bush’s policies. It was sickening seeing him hug Bush on stage. At that moment, he sold out to a president who has done more to polarize and damage this country, than any president in recent memory.Maverick my butt. When he had a chance to show he was different, he caved in to Bush. (cont)

Dirtmusic- There is a political ad that has Palin stating that she is in favor of the bridge. It actually has her speaking on the subject. Then, she changed her mind and was against the bridge when major cost overruns were discovered. These film clips were taken way before she appeared at the Repub Convention. The woman has some questions to answer. Hopefully, she will be forced to defend her positions in the debates. Then, hopefully, we’ll all get to see her under pressure.

Of course they didn’t use teleprompters. What is the need for teleprompters when you’re simply repeating the same speech over and over at rallies.

I’ve seen the McCain-Palin ticket at three rallies now and they’ve given the exact same rhetoric.

So, for you daddy f**king conservatives. I suggest you perhaps learn about the issues and read rather than playing party politics. I personally never understood why hicks vote republican, they’d be better off under a democrat…?

McCain/Palin are a joke. McCain can’t govern the country he doesn’t even know world geography. Did you know that Iraq is next to Iran according to McCain. I am fully prepared to be embarrassed for Ohio again just like I was in 2004. The #1 issue is the war. This is not a traditional war where an army is defeated and we can say that we’ve won. There is no winning this war. We are fighting religious zealots w/ a horrible quality of life. No solution in Iraq will ever satisfy all sects. Vote Obama and stop the bleeding. When McCain came back from Vietnam, he cheated repeatedly on his crippled wife, and then divorced her to marry Cindy Hensley. In the 1980’s McCain lobbied for Charles Keating, the saving and loan felon who stole billions in pension money, and took numerous jet set vacations at Keating’s expense. In the 1990’s McCain had an affair with a lobbyist that so scared his staff, that they told her to stay away from him. His campaigns for the Senate were all financed with his wife Cindy’s mob money. In 1994 Cindy McCain forged prescriptions in the names of her employees and stole drugs from her own charity. McCain’s campaign this year is getting huge amounts of oil company money. His pick for vice president is under an ethics investigation and will probably be indicted on Oct 31st. McCain is 72 years old, has had cancer 5 times and is on 5 different medications. He is so out of it, that his staff will no longer let him talk to the press unscripted.

I for one am tired of the 90%, 95% BS. In fact, about 90% of ALL votes in the Senate are UNANIMOUS votes for such mundane things like “Making the Butterfly the national insect”!! When it comes down to partisan votes, BHO votes with his party EVERY time and McCain often votes AGAINST his party when he feels it is not in the best interests of the people. I’ll take a “maverick” any day over a party line man. Please don’t bring up those percentages again - PLEASE!

The vicious attacks on McCain and Palin are nothing more than the bluster that is all that can be mustered by the Dems, who have a “moose in the headlights” look now that the “Straight Talk” express is running them off the tracks. After what I saw happen to Ken Blackwell, the most qualified person ever to seek the office of Ohio governor, and combine that with the fact the GOP is now electrified with the Palin choice, I expect a 10% GOP margin in Ohio and a 15% landslide nation-wide on Nov 4.

New Taxes— For all of you who think raising taxes on people (taxable entities) that report 250,000.00 or more in earnings does not affect you: That top three percent of taxpayers employ all of the rest of us, they also own the businesses that sell us our gas and groceries, clothes and services. How do you think they will make up the raise in taxes??? they will simply charge you more or lay off some of you. Is that the kind of change you are looking for, then vote for Obama.

Once again Dems, don’t get mad at anyone but yourselves, you are the numbnuts that voted Obama in as your candidate, Hillary,Edwards,Biden could have beat McCain hands down, but no you had to have the rock star with no experience as the front runner on your ticket, the only one who could not beat McCain, and then he didn’t even pick Hillary as is vp. Just when you think the Dems can’t get any dumber they make another bonehead move, Hey Dems keep votin for them rock stars, Thanks for the win in08

As Becca wrote, she thinks Palin is cool and pretty, so what else matters in choosing the VP, right???? I’m a working mom, so issues like the economy, education, the war and healthcare mean a whole lot to me when I decide to vote. I see a big difference in the reality versus the image of Palin and McCain. The word hypocrisy (a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.)seems to apply to them well.

ExcusesExcuses: In actuality, conservatives are much less concerned with race than are Liberals. We tend to believe that everyone should have a level playing field. The only people bringing up race in this election are Hussein Obama and his supporters. I suspect thats a calculated move to distract people from focusing on his lack of accomplishments and a record of any kind. He couldn’t even decide to vote Yes or No on over 130 votes in the Senate.

I was not at the rally but sure wished I could have attended. You know it just amazes me of how the ignorant people believing Obama’s lies choose to open their mouth and sound even more ignorant. Sarah Palin will work wonders as a VP. You Dems just wait and see. Ya know, where were you guys when Billy Boy was getting his in the Oval Office. Come on… Show some good sense. Geeeezzzzzz.

All of this is in writing on Obama’s website. I bet NONE OF You MCCAIN SUPPORTERS ON HERE MAKE EVEN CLOSE TO THAT BRACKET! Stop with the excuses…bottom line you do not want to see a BLACK president! SAD! But true! First it was NO Experience, then Palin came along now it’s RAISING taxes! OHIO is nothing compared to NY he has votes there!

I was front and center at the rally and I’ll share with you that neither John nor Sarah gave “teleprompter” speeches—both spoke their minds from within and the crowd loved every word they said. Folks, these two ARE the real deal—the difference between them and the “Empty Suit” the dems are passing off as a candidate is astounding. The crowd’s energy bespeaks a level of vitality I’ve never seen in the Republican party in my lifetime. The debates should remove all doubt…

Hillary is a female trying to be man like. It turned people off. Sarah Palin is a woman and it shows through even with her conservative views. She has confidence and intelligence that are not diminished by her femininty. Hilliary did not have a feminine gene in her body.

I was at the rally for McCain-Palin today in Lebanon. It was an exciting time with lots of enthusiasm. I was also at the Dole-Kemp politcal rally in Lebanon in 1996. I tell you this crowd today was much much larger with lots of women attending. As far as her speech at the Republican Convention, she hit it at of the ballpark. Many people in the media and the Democratic campaign are saying it wasn’t HER WORDS even eluding to the speech writer. All national politicians have speech writers. Hello!!!

Isn’t it interesting that the Dems scream they are for women’s rights and equality, but now are busy trying to belittle and demean a woman who has achieved success and, if elected, would move the women’s agenda ahead dramatically? The criticism about working and having a family is odd coming from Gloria and the the NOW crowd. I thought they said that a woman could “have it all”. It’s good when we see the Emperor has no clothes. It’s great when the naked truth is reavealed about a whole movement

Obama won’t raise taxes on the lower income people, right? WRONG !!! You just won’t see when you’re paying them!

He’ll raise taxes on corporations, right? And you don’t think that Wal-mart and Speedway and KMart and GM and Krogers will not pass their tax on to you?

Think again! Great! We won’t be paying the taxes we aren’t paying now and paying more for everything else! Great idea! WRONG!

Liberals are so funny and stupid. They are acting like Alaska wasn’t a state before this month, that someone should have told them there was a republican woman governor of Alaska (as opposed to the previous media lovefest with the liberal governor of Vermont Howard Dean). Liberals — get a map and count the states. There are 50. Alaska is one of them. Obama vacations in Hawaii. That is also a state. Alaska provides us with 20% of our national energy needs, but be sure you are up on New Mexico

For years Republican policies have diverted millions of American tax dollars overseas, like over 1 trillion dollars in Iraq alone. We could have fixed our rusting bridges, fixed our century old water/sewage systems, buy books for our school children etc. I’m tired of our country loosing jobs to cheap labor overseas. Countries like China don’t spend a dime outside its borders and they are able to build damns, bridges, skyscapers, etc, fixing their infastructure while ours are decaying.

Here is the diversity I saw at the McCain rally after viewing over 130 photos: Anthony Munoz, McCain’s bus driver, a couple of Secret Service men, and a protester. Reminded me of the Republican Convention. Looking at the photos of Obama’s visit to Stebbins, there was a true representation of America. I am amazed at the reaction for Palin with people wearing “I love Sarah” stickers…you’ve “known” her for less than 2 weeks! I also laugh at their “new” CHANGE slogan…how ORIGINAL!

Still don’t understand why people are excited about Palin. So far, we know that she likes to hunt, likes guns, is pro-life, likes large families, has a pregnant daughter, was for the bridge to nowhere in Alaska, wants her brother-in-law fired on behalf of her sister and read the company line at the Repub Convention. We also know that people will vote Repub because they like her as a woman(??) and that she represents the “family”. But- what about her qualifications for VP? We’ve heard nothing yet.

Senator McCain always served his country with honor. He will honor his word and bring about change. He has the bipartisan experience to reach out for it. He has always had the character to vote for what’s best for America. He is the first Presidential canidate to NOT be a party stooge in my lifetime. He is the Man of CHOICE. Obama is a man of choice also. Interfax chose him over McCain. Why?? He will be more flexible. Translation: More easily manipulated. McCain has my vote. America my prayers.

Ok first off Sarah Palin is a EXTREME religious right wing crazy. She is also a liar, she lobbied FOR the bridge to nowhere but when more experienced DEMOCRATS in Washington laughed at her and her state for wanting to waste 27million dollars she then became against it but, and this is the big one…ALASKA KEPT THE 27MILLION. She is nothing more than a gun toting soccer mom who should go back to Alaska where less than 1 percent of the population lives and stay out of REAL executive decisions!

McCain talking about change makes me laugh. He is asking us to return to power the party that got us in this mess to begin with. As for Palin, she may be a hockey mom, but she’s no vice president. Did McCain really think that picking someone with the same genitalia as Hillary would cause her supporters to align with Palin? That’s condescending and sexist. McCain has always belittled the VP position, so it’s not surprising he picked a “trophy” MILF.

Actually the number of times John McCain voted with the Rep. Party is just under 90%. Try a non-partisan fact checking service like www.factcheck.org.

On the flip-side, if want to discuss PARTY POLITICS Obama voted the Dem Party line just over 97% of the time.

AND Sen Obama voted with President Bush (at least show some class and repect for the office, if not the man) just over 40% of the time. That means Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama voted THE SAME on more the 50% of the votes.

Sarah Palin is reading speeches that someone else wrote for her. Since she hasn’t spoken with the press directly, all we can know is that she has public speaking skills.

Those speeches might “speak to” you, but remember they aren’t her words, or even, necessarily, something she agrees with.

At this point, I still view her as a ‘token woman’ since McCain needed a woman to flesh out his ticket and attempt to attract Hillary supporters. As a Hillary supporter myself, it didn’t work.

What an exceptional patriot this man is and a proven advocate for change, bucking the system, and bipartisonship. When you are in a box in Hanoi, you don’t communicate to your fellow Americans on the basis of party affiliation, you are a band of brothers simply trying to survive. The phoniness in Washington is on both sides of the aisle albeit a Dem or Repub. This man will break that, and protect our great country. He’ll put you first, before himself. Think for yourself, not the union.

More people need to go to the POLITIFACT website for the truth, if you’re interested and stop voting PARTY POLICIS just because your mom and dad do it. THINK PEOPLE!
