SPRINGFIELD —  Two people who were found with 71 dead cats in their home last September were sentenced to jail and community service Monday, Jan. 12.

Clark County Municipal Court Judge Denise Moody sentenced Loyce Ogden, 57, to 90 days in jail. She sentenced Craig Hunt, 64, to serve 10 days of community service at the Clark County Humane Society.

"We want to show him how to properly care for animals," said Ed Sisler, director of the Clark County Humane Society. "I expect nothing to be negative out of this."

Both were found guilty in Clark County Municipal Court of five counts each of animal cruelty Nov. 24.

Clark County Humane Society officials found 124 cats — 53 alive and 71 dead — at 2425 Beatrice St. on Sept. 11.

Investigators found the dead cats wrapped in newspaper and sealed in garbage bags in the garage. Four of the dead cats were found under a bed and 67 in the garage.

Hunt was fined $500 plus court costs and is prohibited from possessing pets, according to court documents.

He was also ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to court records.

Of the 53 live cats that were taken from the home, Humane Society officials were able to save 27, Sisler said. All but one have been adopted, he said.

The home had animal feces throughout the house and no-working toilets and drains.

The Beatrice Street home has been condemned by the health department and the residents were ordered to vacate.
