Gone Country
Country musicians big on helping Jerry's kids
Sunday, August 31, 2008
Nothing says Labor Day Weekend like a cold one, sleeping in and Jerry Lewis.
Not the "hey, lady!" guy, or the one recently busted for packing heat at a Las Vegas airport. Actually, it is the same guy, but the one I'm talking about also happens to be hosting his 43rd MDA Telethon tonight and tomorrow in the aforementioned Vegas, baby.
The 82-year old has been donating his time to the fight against muscular dystrophy for over half his life, and wouldn't have it any other way.
Neither would many of today's top country stars.
"The country music community has always supported 'my kids,' " Lewis said. "I'm glad to again to have several country stars join me on the Telethon and I'm excited about the new online auction filled with many unique country music donated items to help MDA."
Watch for performances from Sugarland, Tracy Lawrence, Jimmy Wayne, Bo Bice and Kid Rock. Billy Gilman, all grown up now, will serve as one of the many "co-hosts" throughout the telethon.
Brand new this year is the national telethon online auction at www.mda.org/auctions, which is already up and running.
You can bid on tickets to see Tracy Lawrence at the Grand Ole Opry on Oct. 21, including round-trip air, one-night hotel stay in Nashville and a private backstage tour with Tracy. Or how about a Reba McEntire personally owned, worn and autographed Roberto Cavalli suede skirt? A Charlie Daniels autographed golden fiddle? A phone call from Billy Gilman and autographed memorabilia? Various guitars autographed by Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley, LeAnn Rimes, Jewel and others? They'll all be up on the auction block.
In addition to country-related items, there's lots of stuff from Harley-Davidson's 105th anniversary celebration
(HD is a huge supporter of MDA), a chance to hang out with "American Idol" alum Ace Young, and a year's worth of gas from Citgo.
The auction runs through Thursday, Sept. 4. Last year's telethon, broadcasted on more than 180 TV-stations and raised a record $63.8 million for "Jerry's Kids."
Here in the Miami Valley, you can find the show on ABC Channel 22 which will be broadcasting its 40th anniversary telecast.
Yours truly will be there tomorrow morning, right before noon. Please call. The first step in finding a cure for muscular dystrophy begins with you.
