Just when you were getting used to sandals and sundresses, the leaves are preparing to make their annual change.

But there is no reason to fret. Fall presents the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate your wardrobe and decide what clothes are out and which ones will take you into winter.

Fall fashion is a favorite time a year for many women. The fresh harvest of wears and accessories, some new and some new again, is now ready for the picking. But don't let the changing trends dictate your look or the amount of money you spend. Pick out items that work for you and will last.

Neck appeal

Eye-catching details like neck bows, ties and ruffles — some large other subtle — can add romance to your look. The vintage looks provide a focal point and, like many of this season's selections, pay homage to trends of years past with a sophisticated twist. Pick up a few scarves and not just the heavy wool ones. Decorative scarves can easily add a versatile accent and update an outfit. (This trend is big for men and women.)

Play up the hourglass

Belts of various thicknesses will be among the must-have accessories this season. And not all the belts will be used to hold up you pants. Many are thinner and more decorative than offerings last year, but they do the same thing: cinch the waist. This trend adds proof that the hourglass figure is back. Consider a waist corset belt. But not every belt is right for everybody. Taller women should consider thicker belts, while shorter ones usually look best in thinner belts. Make sure to keep your look balanced.

Berries and garden-variety colors

Think cranberries, crushed raspberries, cherries and tomatoes when you shop for your clothes and accessories this season. But don't forget the grapes, plums, eggplants and oranges. These richly intensive hues are inviting and bold. Balance it all with a healthy dose of neutrals — black, white, taupe and brown. Other hot colors include lilac, sea green and yellow ochre.

Lace it up

Lace is not just for the doily on grandma's coffee table, nightgowns or '80s Madonna videos. And it is no longer just for wedding and confirmation dresses. Lace (particularly black) can be playful and sexy on dresses, skirts and shirts.

Dress it up

Dresses are back and bold. The printed-dress trend hot this summer will continue through the fall. Look for winter flowers and hippy-dippy Bohemian printed dresses as well as classics like black and white.

Be a grand ol' country girl

Add a few "country chic" pieces to your wardrobe. We're not talking home on the range, but more like Queen Elizabeth on holiday with the corgis. Try brown riding boots, faux fur coats and collars, plaid capes, long wool skirts and hats with flair

Add a new leg up

Skinny pants remain a favorite for the rocker boys and girls among us, but this season there are many cuts in jeans and trousers to choose from. They include high-waisted trouser pants, cropped slacks and bell-bottom jeans. Slouchy pleated pants are also on the horizon.
