Meatball competition spices up authors' visit to The Greene

BEAVERCREEK — Tuesday brings an opportunity to show off your meatball-making wizardry for some experts as well as some of your fellow home chefs.
Books & Co. will combine a meet-the-authors event with a meatball-recipe contest at 6 p.m. Tuesday at its Beavercreek store, 4453 Walnut St., in The Greene. The authors are Pino Luongo and Mark Strausman, who collaborated to write "Two Meatballs in the Italian Kitchen" (Artisan, $35).

Luongo, a native of Tuscany, and Strausman, born in New York City, have been friends and business partners for 20 years, and they own restaurants together, including Coco Passo and Fred's at Barneys in Manhattan.
The cookbook features more than 140 recipes, sometimes accompanied with spirited dialogue between the authors, who rarely agree on how best to prepare Italian specialties such as risotto, or even meatballs: Luongo's are smaller, made of ground veal and fried in olive oil, while Strausman's consist of equal parts beef, pork and veal and cook by simmering in tomato sauce.
Michael Marks, chef at Brio Tuscan Grill at The Greene, will help judge the meatball-recipe contest, and audience members will get a chance to sample the entries. The winner will receive a signed copy of the book and a bottle of Banfi wine, bookstore officials said.
As part of the event, attendees can make reservations to have a spaghetti-and-meatball dinner (prepared from the cookbook's recipes) with the authors at Brio at 7:30 p.m. following the book-signing. The cost is $78 for two, or $54 for one, which includes dinner and the cookbook. Call (937) 429-7792 to make reservations for the dinner.
