Love is in the air for pets and owners
Sunday, February 10, 2008
Love is in the air as Valentine's Day approaches. For most of us that's a good thing.
If you are a cat, not so much.
Extras
That's why the Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals is offering $10 male cat neuters for low-income owners on Feb. 27 in conjunction with national Spay Day.
Spay Day is a national event usually held around Valentine's Day to encourage owners to help curb pet over-population.
For the SICSA coupons, a completed application, with proof of income, must be mailed or brought with a payment before an appointment is scheduled. Applications can be printed at www.sicsa.org or call (937) 294-6505 to get one mailed.
Valentine party set
If you are looking for the love of your life, you might attend the Valentine party at the Humane Society of Preble County's Pet Center, 951 S. Barron St. in Eaton, noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 17.
Visitors are also allowed to bring valentines for the animals.
For more information, call (513) 524-3349.
Workshop about controlling feral cat populations
The Miami County Humane Society is also looking for love in all the wrong places — and trying to stop it.
On Feb. 23, the society will hold a workshop about how to control feral (wild) cat populations by using the Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) technique, the most cost efficient and humane way of controlling these cats. The free workshop will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Troy Miami Co. Library at 419 W. Main St. The workshop is open to the public. No registration necessary. For more information, call (937) 698-7322 regarding any questions concerning the TNR Workshop or cat adoptions or the cat adoption program.

For a 20-pound dog, one ounce of cheddar cheese is equal to a human eating 1 1/2 hamburgers or 1 1/2 chocolate bars. Thirty-five percent of pets in the United States are overweight. Pet obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and a shortened life expectancy.
