Church rewards drill team with bowling party
Thursday, August 14, 2008
For the forth time in five years, Dayton's drill team and drum corps, The Invincible Regulating Striders (IRS) from Way of the Cross Gospel ministries, were crowned National Drill Team Champions at the 2008 Grand Lodge World Drill-A-Rama competition Aug. 2 in Detroit, Mich.
"A lot of stories you read about young kids are negative," said David Jones, Way of the Cross pastor. "These 70-plus kids practice three to five times a week to become the best in the country and there's not a word said about them in the local media.
"You'd have to come out and watch one of their practices to really appreciate their dedication and their ability to go out year after year and become national champions."
Not only did IRS bring home the Best Drill Team gold, they also received awards for Most Colorful Youth Group, Best Drill Team Captain (Kendra Williamson) — senior division, 3rd place senior division in Precision Category, 1st place drum division and 1st place junior division in Precision Category.
To celebrate the accomplishments of IRS, Way of the Cross is hosting a bowling party on Friday, Aug. 15, at Way of the Cross' combination church/bowling alley at 4801 Hoover Ave. The party begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. For more information call 263-5964.
