DAYTON — World AIDS Day is today, Dec. 1, a day for increasing awareness, fighting prejudice, improving education and raising money, local health officials and AIDS advocates say.
“This day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away and that there are many things still to be done,” said Andrea Young, supervisor of the HIV/AIDS programs for Public Health — Dayton and Montgomery County. “We are encouraging people to be more proactive, to come out and participate, get tested and know your status.”
Young, citing Ohio Department of Health data, said there were 1,008 reported persons living with HIV/AIDS in Montgomery County as of December 2007.
Worldwide, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS estimates there are 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children.
During 2007, some 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. About half of all people who became infected with HIV did so before they were 25 and died from AIDS-related diseases before they were 35.
Several education, testing and fundraising events in Dayton are scheduled today.
The RTA Hub at 4 S. Main St. will have a display table from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring brochures and other materials about HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases and local services.
