XENIA — Local gardeners wishing to advance their knowledge and circle of gardening friends can sign up for the 2010 Greene County Master Gardener certification classes, set to begin in February.
Classes will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 4 through April 8 at the OSU Extension-Greene County office, 100 Fairground Road.
Individuals can also attend the Montgomery County series of classes beginning March 2 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, but must volunteer in their home county.
Topics taught during the series include botany, soils, trees, woody ornamentals, backyard fruit, pruning, plant propagation, lawn care, herbaceous ornamentals, plant pathology, entomology, vegetables, herbs, container gardening, composting, integrated pest management, plant diagnostics and more.
In Greene County, Master Gardeners design and maintain the James Ranch Display Garden in Xenia, as well as Wartinger Park, Beavercreek, and Mercer Smith Gardens, Fairborn.
Greene County Master Gardeners host educational seminars, work with school gardening clubs, coordinate beautification efforts with local municipalities and more.
Upon receiving an application, an orientation or briefing will be scheduled at the applicant’s convenience at either 5:30 p.m. Jan. 18; 10 a.m. Jan. 19; or 2:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the extension office.
Requirements to become certified as a Greene County Master Gardener are completing the 10-week series of classes, having a clear fingerprint and background check, passing a take-home test and volunteering for OSU Extension for 50 hours between Feb. 4 and Oct. 15.
Cost for the class series and certification is $150 with $50 (non-refundable) due upon receipt of the application. The remaining $100 is due the first day of class.
A check or money order should be payable to OSU Extension-Greene County.
