Here are some of the upcoming events focusing on breast cancer slated to take place in the Miami Valley:
MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER is the annual 5K walk that raises funds for the American Cancer Society and honors breast cancer survivors and those who have died from the disease.
This year’s event will be held Oct. 15 at the Dayton Dragons’ Fifth Third Field. Registration and festivities begin at 9 a.m., the walk starts at 10 a.m. Morning activities include vendors, educational booths, games and give-aways.
To learn more or register for the event, visit cancer.org/stridesonline. Registration is also available the day of the walk.
THE FOURTH ANNUAL BREAST CANCER VIDEO CONTEST, designed to promote breast health education and awareness in the Dayton community and beyond, will award more than $10,000 in scholarships and prizes. The contest began Oct. 1 and the deadline for entry is Oct. 31.
All high school students (grades 9-12) in the Greater Miami Valley area with a sponsoring school may participate. To enter, teachers are asked to submit all completed applications, forms, and discs with videos in QuickTime format to a contest coordinator, who will post the videos on YouTube on Nov. 1. There is no contest fee.
After the videos are posted, teachers will give students information to encourage viewing and voting from family and friends. Videos will be posted by title only — the school and student’s names will not be posted.
Scholarships ranging from $400 to $2,000 will be given to the top 10 winners and an engraved traveling trophy and check for $1,000 will be presented to the school that has the top award.
In addition to these top 10 awards, each school will receive a $250 scholarship to honor the best video entry from that school. Five cash prizes ($100 to $500) will be presented for the top five videos with the most YouTube hits.
The contest is sponsored by the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) and Breast Cancer Task Force of the Greater Miami Valley (BCTF).
