A new portrait has just been added to the collection of paintings gracing the halls of the second floor of St. Mary’s Hall at the University of Dayton.
Brother Raymond L. Fitz’s official presidential portrait is the 17th in the collection that honors past UD presidents. All have been priests; Fitz was the first Marianist brother to lead the university.
The new addition is the work of Kettering artist Seth Wade who works as an art instructor at Otterbein Retirement Living Community. He spent a year in an artist’s colony in Arizona studying the traditional painting techniques of the Dutch masters.
Wade was educated at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and Sinclair Community College. He worked from a series of photographs, combining various elements of each to create the final portrait.
The official presentation of the painting took place at a small gathering on Thursday, May 21, with Brother Ray’s family and friends attending as well as trustees and key administrators.
Brother Fitz was the longest-serving president in the school’s history, serving 23 years. He now works in the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community as the Ferree Professor of Social Justice.
