Help for navigating the journey

Cancer. The word alone can trigger a flood of emotions.

Beyond the fear, anger or frustration there can be there can also be countless questions and choices that need to be made from selecting the best treatment options to choosing the right physician and health care facility.

If you or someone you know is facing such a diagnosis, then you aren’t alone — as the American Cancer Society reports that the chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer at some point during her lifetime is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer, however, is about 1 in 37, a number that has been decreasing in recent year, likely the result of earlier detection and better treatment. And there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone.

For those who are navigating the cancer journey, here is a look at providers and health care facilities Miami Valley cancer patients have to choose from both locally and throughout the state.

Breast surgeon Roxane Weighall is the Dayton area’s only surgeon qualified to perform hidden scar breast cancer surgery. The procedure is an advanced approach in which the surgeon removes cancerous tissue through a single incision made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring.

Chemotherapy, biotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy are available at Kettering, Sycamore, Grandview, Greene Memorial and Fort Hamilton. Chemotherapy will soon be offered at Soin Medical Center. Many of these treatment regimens can be done on an outpatient basis.

Radiation therapy is available at Kettering, Greene Memorial and Fort Hamilton. HDR brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery are available at Kettering. In treating women who have cancer in the left breast, a state-of-the-art radiation technique called respiratory gating is used. It synchronizes the delivery of radiation to the part of a woman’s breathing cycle when her breast is farthest away from her heart. This allows precision radiotherapy that eliminates any significant radiation dose to a woman’s heart, thus substantially decreasing her risk of cardiac complications in the future.
