Rike's hats for sale at Oakwood shop

Style from the Rike-Kumler Company is alive and well in one of the Dayton area's most elaborately decorated shops.

The Flower Shoppe, located at 2316 Far Hills Ave. in Oakwood, is selling vintage designer hats once sold at the famed department store that stood at the current site of the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center in downtown Dayton.

Mark Brueninghaus said he bought the hats from a friend who found them at an estate sale.

He thought he was getting about 65 Rike's hats, hat boxes and a hat tree from the store's Moraine Room.

The haul was a lot bigger than that.

"We ended up with about 95, and we have sold about 20 of them so far," Brueninghaus said. "New York City, LA. Most of them will have a designer label in them and the Rike's label, too."

The hats which span the decades between the 1930s to the 1970s are being sold for $45 to $95 with an original Rike's box.

We have a large selection of vintage hats from Rikes department store now at The Flower Shoppe. Each hat comes with a orginal Rikes Moraine Room hat box. Stop in to see the collection.

Like many Daytonians, Brueninghaus remembers Rike's fondly.

"That is where we went for everything from kitchen goods to furnishings to electronic to the toy department on the eighth floor," he said.
