Time Warner's program guide offers extra features
Comment: Has your service been affected by the upgrade?
Friday, July 04, 2008
DAYTON — Time Warner Cable's new Navigator program guide "is a platform that allows (the cable company) to launch enhanced products and services," said Pamela McDonald, vice president of government and public affairs for Time Warner Cable Southwest Ohio.
Navigator includes an Access Menu with listings of on-demand and HDTV programming, and a search tool to find favorite shows.
In the future, Navigator will bring additional features to digital cable customers:
Start Over will allow customers to jump to the beginning of any show they turn to, in progress, from up to 60 networks. Coming in 2009.
Quick Clips will provide highlights from some of the most popular cable networks.
Caller ID on TV will allow digital telephone customers to see who's calling via the TV.
Photo Show TV is a free service that allows customers to create their own video shorts online with photos that they can share with friends and family on digital cable channel 1110.
Time Warner Cable Games will allow customers to play interactive games using the TV and remote control.
Fantasy Sports will provide the ability to check fantasy football and baseball stats over the TV.

Passport is a piece of crap! Slow response to simple things like changing a channel (3-5 sec). It displays the clock in between?? Why?
The worst is the guide. Say I’m watching a show and I missed the beginning, I hit the guide button and then B (find shows). I now have to navigate thru all this crap or type in the name just to find alternate times for what I’m now watching.
We lost a lot of user functionality for what? So they can push more POS/On Demand crap at me. I don’t want that! BS

I agree that the new navigator sucks, as does their customer service. I think there’s no such thing as good service anymore - from anyone. I had Dish before TWC, and they suck, too! These providers need to take what their customers say seriously or else.
On a different note, I read in one of these posts that someone thought the girl in the commercials was annoying. Well, I think she’s stunning, and I look forward to her commercials. She’s the only thing TWC did right!!!

The new Mystro software has cost Time Warner this customer. I’m shopping around for a new cable company. I’ve been a super loyal, very vocal supporter of Time Warner Cable, but this ‘upgrade’ to the DVR software is completely unacceptable. Box crashes/reboots, all my saved programs deleted, rewind works poorly, guide works only sometimes…sometimes can only scroll 1 day ahead. That kind of makes having a DVR worthless. I’m Ghandi TWC.

Hate it!!! After 5 hd dvr boxes 1 modem and 7 service calls this year alone I have come to the conclusion. Time Warner Sucks! Would love to get direct tv but to many trees. My favorite tv show is the blue screen mystro counting down from 14 when the box reboots by itself.

What a piece of garbage. Is there anyone we can turn to? I have had a tech here three times in the last month alone. Our box reboots almost every time we turn it on and it takes for ever to load like 3-5 minutes, then the guide takes even longer to load. The tech tells me we are not alone. They have replaced our box twice. Not to mention the idiot who chose blue on blue must be a real winner as I can’t hardly read it. Probably going to satalite I guess. I hope TWC goes bankrupt. Greedy scum.

Time Warner’s Navigator is awful joke. And the joke is on you. Time Warner should be ashamed. Slow, can’t record shows you want to see. It’s a $1,500.00 a year piece of junk.

The new platform that TW cable introduced to their system in the dyton area takes up to much of the cable boxes system resources. Navigator? More like trying to navigate by Polaris (the North Star) in the daytime. I’ve written to TW twice about all of the problems. No response. Friday - Tuesday of Memorial Day weekend, NO On Demand service. Cable box periodically reboots for no apparent reason. Loading….ARGH!!! When our sound went out this weekend on channels 22-33 (during a REDS GAME), I called (AGAIN) and told the “technician” that I was tired of beta testing their software!

Also, we were watching a recorded show, and the DVR just flipped to some other channel (I think it’s C-Span or CNBC, but I’m not completely sure). It happened when we fast-forwarded through commercials and it skipped back a few seconds. When the show started playing again, it just stopped, no stop dialog or anything. It also happened once at the beginning of a show. Anyone else having these problems?

So, from what I understand, the Navigator is supposed to provide new features. But why force this on us if we are not actually going to get these new features until 2009 or whatever? Why downgrade us to this piece of junk when it’s buggy and everybody hates it? Time Warner Cable: If you’re reading this, you should learn to give us a platform that works, and give it to us when we can get the features it provides. Everyone may hate those too. We’ll see…

I just switched from Directv to Time Warner around a month ago and I LOVE Time Warner. I have no clue what these issues are over people are complaining about. Dont like Time Warner-go with one of the Dish companies. Everytime it clouds up outside you lose your signal. Imagine paying money for a PPV sporting event and having your signal go out while watching it because of a storm. DirecTV says “Oh well, thats your problem” and wont refund your money over it.

I HATE Navigator. It is slow, provides less information, and is harder to find programs and HD versions. The DDN article must have been a reprint of TWC’s press release — or the reporter has satellite and is laughing at us who have cable. This is the Vista or the New Coke of cable. If someone at an executive level does not lose his/her job over this, it’s clear they just don’t care.

I have lived in the area since December, and this is the only guide system I have had with TWC, and it is slow. Channel changing takes awhile. I went back home, set my parents up with Dish Network HD, and its nice, but I don’t want a 2 year deal. I just came back from ATT u-verse will be here in a week, and they will start pre-selling it tomorrow. It is on their website. I will take the plunge, and their HD offerings are nice. They have it set up at their Centerville store.

I’ve had Navigator for about (3) weeks. After numerous phone calls to TWC, several trips to the TWC store to switch out boxes and (3) tech visits, it’s still not working right. It reboots several times a night and locks up to where I can’t change the channels. TWC keeps telling me, “You’re one of the “few” people having problems.” Ha!

Stepping Up - Stop playing with mommy and daddy’s computer and let the adults converse. A real shame that you do not have anything better to do while unsupervised. I for one am very appreciative of DDN for bringing attention to a very real situation and as hard working adults unlike yourself we deserve far better than what TWC is “dishing” out.

Ditto with all the problems…but I’ve tried switching to sattelite, and they sent out “techs” to do the install that hadn’t even been working a week. Plus, when you call into to non-customer service, the call seems to get “disconnected”. That’s the only plus for TWC…you can use some of your $4.00/gal. gas to go to one of their non-customer service offices and get annoyed in person! Another plus for TWC is that I can now recite the words to Karate Kid verbatum!

I have yet to have 1 issue with the system that I PAY FOR.2nd TYPING certain WORDS in ALL caps DOES not MAKE you INTELLIGENT.3rd my 10 year old daughter has a DVR as well and uses the guide and recording functions just fine and she whines more then 95% of you people. I don’t hve TIVO nor do I record shows on a VCR, however, I find that the delay, sometimes 8-10 seconds or more, to change a channel are unacceptable for a service for which I pay almost $100 a month. The additional feature of the “guide” are so slow in response, taking up to 15 seconds to load the data is also unacceptable. This has been one of the worst “upgrades” that Time-Warner has made

I tried to enter all of the problems that I have experienced with the Navigator ‘upgrade’, but I hit the character limit for this Comments box. My advice for anyone who has or is considering TWC, do not sign a two year deal for the very small discount. You will be locked in and will have to pay a penalty to exit the contract when you want to switch. Why do you think they are offering a discount for a 2-year deal? They know the competitions offerings are getting better.

Being in the IT industry, I am all for new technology and upgrades for better features. But when I got the new navigator, I almost smashed my TV in a fit of rage. Today’s #1 feature MUST be speed and this guide fails on that. Also, never take away functionality. What happened to being able to record a show on ANY channel? How did my saved shows disappear one day without my knowing??TWC should be ashamed of putting out such a PIECE…. hire someone that knows what they are doing.

Ok honestly There is a bit of common sense that is required to keep up with the technology. I mean cmon people.STOP BEING LAZY. If you actually took the time for instance to look at the DVR functions it does tell you when there are recording conflicts. But wait theres more. It even tells you the percent your DVR is full. WOW. Its amazing what you find when you actually take the effort and look. And take the effort and actually erase something when your done watching it. Takes 3 seconds.

The new and suppossed to be improved TWC is the worst. It is difficult to navigate and the time hesitation it takes to get to the channel & program guide is maddening. Before I could do series recordings & just record shows one time with my DVR for any amount of time. Now after only a few recordings it says my DVR didn’t record because my recording time is 99% full… WHAT? I don’t even record that much & now I can’t record hardly anything? TERRIBLE, JUST TERRIBLE. Half of the shows I set to record either do not record, record at the wrong time, or appear in the recorded list but do not play. What’s worse is that some shows that I did not select to record are recording. Slow channel changing and numerous unwarranted reboots are also problems with the new guide. Time Warner is a loser corporation, I’ll think about switching to satellite.

I am glad to finally see other people complaining about TWC. I left them in 1992 for Dish and couldnt be happier. After 16 years my bill has dish bill has finally surpassed my 1992 TWC bill and I only had 40 channels then. I have had better than 200 since switching to Dish and have been paying less all these years. And, like Van said, “the storm will pass”, my dish has only lost signal in the heaviest of storms, and as soon as the major clouds pass, it comes right back. DEATH TO TWC!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone mentioned they do not like the girl in the Time Warner commercials — is that the one who is always bad-mouthing the phone company and bumping the guy out of the screen? She is so ANNOYING! I hate those commercials — they are dirtier than a political campaign! She has no positive value to show me what, if anything, is good about the product she is advertising. Come up with an new advertising campaign that is pleasant and innovative and actually makes people WANT to use your product!

I personally don’t have any issues with my service. The only time I have a slow chnl change if when I type in the channel number but if I pressed Select on the remote or did the chnl as 0007 rather than 07 it would change right away. The only thing I dislike that that the search function on the guide is not working. But I can live with that. Like an update with any system there are always going to be probelms and people just need to take a break and relax some.

The people complaining about Spanish channels and no audio have selected SAP or secondary audio on either their cable box or the tv itself. That has nothing to do with the new guide or software. Heck I don’t even work there and I can figure that one out. SAP plays in Spanish or for hearing impaired there is no audio, that is an option available on most tvs and on the cable boxes. Someone has been pushing buttons and put it on themselves, can’t blame the cable company for that one.

It’s somewhat comforting to know I’m not alone in my disgust for the “new and improved” TW system. It’s MUCH slower than the old one and frequently turns my tv off so it can reboot.I’m surprised that Ms.Mcdonald could keep a straight face when making her statement. This is corporate greed so they can charge more for things no one I know of will ever use but have to take to get any channels at all.

The TW Pamela is a goofball. TW has the worst customer service record and there HD channels are well junk. I have HD from them and only get half they channels. They have sent two techs out who replaced all the cable wire in the house, played around with the box, changed the outloet box, etc. and finally said we dont know what is wrong.
I can pay the same amount I am paying to TW and get Direct TV and have 70 more HD channels. Now swirching. TW just does not get it!

The guide has never been a nice thing because it will not let you hide channels you don’t subscribe to or aren’t interested in. Obviously a marketing decision to entice customers to order more channels. But this make the higher channels usless because of all the crap we must surf past.
So tempting to take the box back and say “buh bye!” That’s the only thing that will get their attention.

“Change is always a challenge for people” nice quote! Just like waiting on hold for customer service is a challenge, or waiting for hours on end for them to call me back is a challenge, and TW setting sometime between 3-6 that they just might be able to stop by and fix my cable service is a challenge. How about I give them the challenge of keeping my business! Hello Direct TV. I may have to deal with the weather, but atleast I know the storm will eventually pass and my service will return.

Time Warner has been a continual nightmare. Everything from lying about upgrading the cable lines to my home to repeatedly sending incompetants. I had to reboot the new system numerous times within the first several days just to get it to work at all. On Demand TV was nonexistent for me and the DVR is insane! IT seems the new software takes up too much space and there is no longer room to store programs, not that they can be easily auto-erased anyway. It’s all manual.

It’s horrible!! There’s so many things that go wrong with it I couldn’t even begin to list them. I’m appalled that TW is “standing” by this terrible service. The very least they could do is offer discounted rates while they’re getting their service under control. They obviously were not prepared for the problems this switch over has created, and should have to retify this screw up somehow.

The channel change response is very slow, and the banner keeps losing its information, what little info there is on it right now and we have to keep calling to have it reset. If they are so terrible, why pay so much $$$ to them?? I have been cable free for over three years, and I have no desire to have something like that again until they offer a package where I get all the local channels and then I get to PICK at least a 10-20 or so of the exact channels I want (which according to TW, that option will be NEVER because I asked). Of about 72 Basic and Standard channels, I would want about 15 of them (including local channels), so they are not a good value for me.

Pamela McDonald-do you like your paycheck?
I’m quite certain that a massive class action lawsuit is just the thing to rectify your arrogant attitude- wouldn’t you all agree?
There are to be NO CANCELLATION FEES assessed to anyone who switches to other companies due to your poor service, correct Pamela?
I can guarantee that any judge would rule that the contracts we agreed to are null & void due to the fact that Time Warner has continued to provide a service that does not work.

I thought it was just me. The new Navigator is not user friendly at all, it takes so long to change channels, the “day” button no longer works, you can’t bring up the guide and hit the “fav” key - it just goes back to the regular TV. When you call customer service all they tell you is that they are still working on these problems. Have had TW for many years and seriously thinking of changing. We certainly another cable network to come to our area.

My friend in Columbus has AT&T U-VERSE..he says he luuuvs it super fast chanel surfing and more HD…It’s supposed to be available soon. GET OFF THAT CABLE CRACK PIPE!!

I could list the issues I have had with TW but it would be much shorter to say something nice about their cable service…..oh wait, I don’t have anything! I have tried to cancel 3 times and it is still up and running.

I thought it was just me! I hate the fact that you can’t seem to get info on shows - it’s always… loading. It takes a long time to switch channels. Not to mention on some channels like Soapnet, the digital is poor - it stalls and breaks up-if you even can get to see the channel. I wish we could go back to the old system - this one is just not user friendly and I can’t forsee this ever being “cool” This has nothing to do w/ chg more to do w/ what “works”

PLEASE BRING BACK PASSPORT! I got more information for each show, it was definitely faster, and it is by far the easiest to navigate! I don’t want to eat cake, as the regional government representative for TWC wants me to do. That cake (NAV) is nasty. The NAV code seems to have been written by 10,000 monkeys over two days. It is about the worst customer service software since DOS! PLEASE BRING BACK PASSPORT Ms. TWC Regional rep I want good cake not bad.

Have you actually used the system Ms. McDonald?Doubt it.It isn’t “cool” when the new features DON’T WORK!Get off your high horse and listen to your customers. We’re not stupid! The old Navigator worked just fine. The new one:Slow, slow, slow to download programming..when it downloads at all;says it is:”downloading, please wait.”Gave up after 20 min and had to guess at what I was watching.Program descriptions lack vital info Navigator offered. You force this on me & my bill goes up $5 more a month!

The DVR just fills up and doesnt delete old shows, therefore anything new I want to record never records! So whats the point of having a DVR now? It would be better if it automatically dropped off or warned me it was unable to record, instead it just fails to record. Also if the system reboots during something you record, it doesnt resume once its finished booting. What JUNK. Time Warner is the worst company on earth. Dont waste your money, get rid of it and use a alternative service.

Thanks to all who posted such great alternatives and reiterated all my complaints. I have been a huge DVR fan from the beginning BUT now it is the opposite of what it is supposed to be an dis now completely unreliable! I will do whatever it takes at this point to switch to another service and let TWC know we do have a CHOICE! AT&T or Tivo here I come! TWC can shove this crappy system along with their high rates for a complete downgrade! We should ALL make it our mission to switch!

I don’t know why they fixed something that wasn’t broke. In my monthly bill, I received a pamphlet telling about Navigator and a website to go on to “tell us what you think” I tried to get on this site to tell those condescending idiots at TW that their new Navigator is terrible, but you know what? This site was just like everything else at TW. It came up and said “This site is unavailable” It’s hello Dish for me.

Amazing that TWC admitted this new and improved Navigator was developed in house—absolute piece of junk!!! Daily reboots, lack of program details, unable to pause On Demand movie and resume where paused, 6+ seconds to change a channel, have to unplug the box twice a day to get what little program info Navigator provides, unable to search more than a day ahead, no version/episode info, most shows do not even list the cast, etc. etc. Just another reason to consider switching to Dish!!

Why fix something that wasn’t broke in the first place! I hate it. It’s to slow, you put in 3 numbers and it goes to 4 number channels and then you have to wait and start over again. You can’t see the ** thing since it’s blue, it re-boots right in the middle of your show you are watching. You already price gouge us to death, I think I would rather buy gas at high prices then use this screwed up remote! TW you screwed up. Survey your customers 1st on what we want, we do pay your salaries!

What a piece of junk. When I check tosee that the shows I want to record are marked properly; they’re gone! Every week or so I have to call TWC and ask they to reset the box (after waiting 25-35 minutes to talk so someone. I found this change when I turned on my TV one time. I never knew it was coming. How can I get u-verse? Bring back my Passport!!!

Amazing quote from the TWC spokesperson; “”Change is always a challenge for people,” ….”But I think as they get used to it and start using some of the new features, they’ll find that this is going to be very cool.” Not aeven a (fake) sense of Customer Service, Customer Satisfaction or sensitivity. She said essentialy “they’ll get over it.” Amazingly callous.
I will certainly do that - this week. Hello Dish!

What’s all the fuss? Navigator is great! You can watch your favorite movie and have it reboot at the most exiting part! Our “Find Shows” button only displays an up and down arrow and if you push the up or down arrow, it reboots again! I’m an OSU fan but I don’t have to worry about seeing their games on the Big10 network on TWC. What a company! Got to go…their coming to take me away, ha ha, hee hee….

This is an abysmal decision obviously done with us poor alpha testing customers as unsuspecting pawns. The arrogant comments in this article are telling as well. Pretty disappointing overall. You guys need to rethink this thing and listen to what your bread and butter base is or you’ll wake up with more challenging changes than you ever figured. Thanks.

The worst business decision of the year. They lost me as a customer. And I couldn’t be happier…DIRECTV is not only cheaper, the picture quality is far superior, and the Movies on Demand work as they are intended, something Time Warner hasn’t been able to do for the last 6 months, with four different cable boxes and several visits from their techs. In that time, I probably spent 15 hours on the phone waiting on hold for “Customer Service”. A minimum of one to one and a half hours at a time!

Buy Tivo—been using it for 8 years now. Have 3 of them active right now at 2 residences. Many friends have it—they prefer. I use one friend’s TWC DVR (new and old version) and HATE it. Totally sux. Pay for Tivo—you will be glad you did—they even have one that records DVDs of the shows you save. Love it!!!

I agree that the new Navigator is horrible. And to the need for typing 4 digits to get to a channel? That is hogwash. The Navigator never picks up the first number press, so I always have to re-enter the channel more than once. I am going to switch to DISH if this doesn’t get rectified soon.

I have no problem with change and look forward to upgrades in technology from any source (I’m an IT guy, in fact), but the new interface from Time Warner is terrible. I’ve never seen such a big step backward in basic technology. Sure, it’s prettier to look at, but it is so slow to change channels that it’s down right frustrating. I’m now comparing Dish and DirecTV for a better solution.

I sent Time Warner my impressions of the new software a few weeks ago. I said that if I gave the old software a grade of ‘A’, the new software was a ‘C’. After using it another week or so, I find I was too kind. The new software is, at best, a ‘D-‘. I can’t believe the loss of functionality and performance. Going backwards might be change, but it is also stupid.

Wow. and here I thought we were the only ones. It was great to see this article and find out we weren’t the only victims of the new software, but HORRIBLE to see TW doesn’t seem to think it has a problem. Like I have to time to research a switch, but maybe the time has come.

PLEASE BRING BACK PASSPORT! Navigator is garbage. And I don’t want to learn how to gamble on fantasy football!! I canceled my premium channels in protest to this new “service.” The only way to get TWC to act proper is to boycott some of their services. So my suggestion is to call them up cancel a portion of your service. Shoot, you might get the 6 month deal I was offered for Showtime for free! HAHAHAHAHA. Didn’t bite on that one. Sorry TWC, your customer service sucks.

PLEASE BRING BACK PASSPORT! The comments of the Government liaison is typical of the poor customer service oriented local TWC. She basically is telling us to eat cake! (and learn how to gamble on fantasy football!). My dear Time-Warner person, please understand that customers are the ones who dictate what services they want, not the company ramming poor products down their throats. I even canceled my premium channels in protest to NAV. I am about to call Dish if TWC doesn’t fix this mess
