Talk host Scinto dropped in move to 'reposition' radio station, GM says
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
Jim Johnson, WDAO-AM (1210) president and general manager, declined Tuesday, March 3, to comment directly on the dismissal of conservative talk show host Mike Scinto, but said he wishes the former commentator well.
Scinto, who has spent the past 10 years of his longtime radio career at WDAO-AM, said he was terminated Monday, March 2.
Scinto said Johnson called him Monday morning and said advertisers were not supporting his show, "Expressions II," which aired noon to 2 p.m.
Johnson said, "The only thing I would say is he is a very good announcer, but I don't discuss personnel issues.
"I'm repositioning the radio station and am looking at how to get the most out of the radio station. I see a wonderful opportunity for us to move the radio station along."
Johnson said he hasn't decided whether to hire a replacement.
Scinto, he said, is among a number of announcers and commentators who host discussions of local, state and national issues.
"Mr. Scinto did a wonderful job for us and I wish him well," Johnson said.
Scinto, 56, thinks his criticism of President Barack Obama and the recently signed $787 billion economic stimulus package also played a role.
"I wish he would've said, 'I want you out of here because you don't like Obama,' " Scinto said.
He said the voice mailbox on one of his two cell phones was filled Tuesday and he had received numerous messages from listeners following his termination. Many, he said, told him they would miss him as a presence in local talk radio.
Scinto also discussed his fate on a nationally syndicated radio show hosted by Mike Gallagher, the conservative and former Dayton radio personality. Scinto's story also received a bevy of comments on DaytonDailyNews.com.
Scinto began his career of 33 years in local radio at Springfield's WBLY while a Wright State University student in 1976.
From there, he worked stints at local stations WAVI (where he worked with Gallagher), WING, WHIO and held roles at television stations WDTN and WHIO.
He was terminated by WHIO radio in 1992.
Scinto then worked several out-of-town radio jobs until Johnson hired him at WDAO in April 1999.
"My show was hosted by a conservative white guy, and I wasn't sure it would work on a liberal black radio station," Scinto said.
WDAO, on its Web site, is described as a station "targeted to the metro community with music, news, information and special features specifically geared to their lifestyles."
Johnson Communications Inc., bought the station in June 1988. The purchase resulted in Dayton having its first minority-owner and operated radio station, its Web site said.
"It hasn't been a job, but a passion," Scinto said. "In my 33 years in the business, this was my longest stint at any one station. I'm just sorry I didn't get to go on and say goodbye."

Today, I woke up to Scinto’s voice on a nationally syndicated radio talk show. He did a GREAT job! During the years I worked at Wright-Patt, everyday, I tuned in to Mike’s show. I felt I personally knew he and his regular callers. Even though I’m no longer in Ohio, I can’t imagine WDAO’s talk shows’ continued success without a voice such as Scinto’s. We blacks need to open our minds to someone else’s opinions, even when it’s about Obama.

How does it feel to have a Black man for a President? Oh, the irony!!! Hail President Obama! Mike this should have happened long ago! You are a buffoon! If you were really smart you’d look up one of those internet radio venues and host your own show but you’re not as smart as you claim you are. Good riddance. I’ll miss the show. I will not miss the way you mishandled people.

Stop talking about your adopted daughter in an effort to garner sympathy. You knew she was disabled when you adopted her so stop trying to get sympathy for it. I know you’re getting some sort of assistance to deal with her medical issues.

Every time I listened to you brag about how you have so much money and don’t have to work and if you were fired on Monday you’d have a job on Tuesday how’s that going? In this economy, it truly is sad that a man whose career is built on make believe has all of these offers you speak about and people who truly need jobs aren’t even getting one phone call telling them th

Mike,
You really had no sympathy for the common man. In fact, you used the common man in Dayton to boost your career. You belittled people all of the time. You though you were pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes. You were permitted to call in to & be patched through on your cell when you were late multiple times. Most listeners weren’t smart enough to figure that out. You were fortunate that you were able to make a career out of running your big mouth for as long as you have.

I started as a teen with WDAO & Raymond Graham on Backpage. Loved participating because he was a great local host. When he left I wandered to WHIO because at that time they offered a variety of views from local hosts. As soon as they went syndicated conservative 24/7 I turned them off. Never liked Ecton’s style but Scinto was interesting whether I agreed with him or not. Sad how talk radio has gotten away from offering variety & local voices. There’s always internet radio & podcasts Mike…

I assumed this was a two week old issue and was done. I was astounded when I got one of the callers I still get daily from listeners, to see if anything has changed, to tell me people are STILL commenting on the story on here. I decided to take a look today and was knocked off my feet! This has taken on a life of its own. And I am still being contacted to do interviews about what happened. There are some great comments on here and some people who need to spend a few months on a shrink’s couch.

I must say it is going to be embarassing to just have only Ecton to listen to. The way he butchers the english language is terrible, by mis-pronouncing $1.00 and $5.00 words. Ecton and Brown were good at doing that. Some times I would wonder if the two of them ever graduated from high school. Anyway Mike there are plenty of right wing radion stations up and down the AM dial. Besides anytime one of you syndicated buddies need you to fill in for them, you got a gig.

Another point is this, the only good reason for Mr. Johnson firing you. Would have been for all of the time you take off. I would say to myself all the time, if it were anyone else at the station they would have been fired along time ago. I thought you and Mr. J. tight like that. I use to joke to myself saying, “Ecton want work no more than he has to, Brown is a jamacan, he does his, Ecton, and yours Scinto. And you Mike are a lazy American.”

Another point I would like to make is that I think Mr. Johnson was spineless firing you the way he did. I know your ratings surpassed Ecton and Brown by a landslide. That’s why it took two of them, and one of you to do a show. Even though our community didn’t like many things that you said. You were entertaining. And you kept the callers, calling listening. Waiting to see what your were going to say next.

Hey Mike,
I disagreed with you more than agreed. But you were far better than all the syndicated conservative talking Arses on radio. Even you must admit, a person could be in a coma for five years and come out of it. And conservative radio and tv talking arses would be screaming about the same thing. Enough of this preaching to the choir. That is what helped through them out of office. I give props to you for seeing the damage they do 24/7 hate radio. You were different and that was a relief

The great thing about Mike’s show was that at least 50-60% of the show was dialogue between he and the callers. We knew that Mike was a Conservative Republican, but he allowed and debated differring view points. He established rapport and built relationships with the listeners. I really looked forward to 12-2. I leave with this thought. Mike worked for 10 years under the leadership of a Black man. For me, that speaks highly of his character. Capitalism has it ups and downs.

I’ve been reading most of the letters, let’s remember talk radio is entertainment, a pentions, communicating and debating. That’s what I enjoyed about all of WDAO talk shows not just Mikes show. I worked in radio for years and intelligence does not always make a good talk show host, the best talk show host in dayton was Raymond Graham, people use to love and hate him but they listened every Sunday, being smart doesn’t make you good, entertainment make you good just ask Rush.

Why is anyone surprised that an anti Obama right winged conservative was fired from a radio station that is very liberal minded (ownership as well as listenership). I was more surprised that he was hired and lasted this long.

Henry I’ve been reading your comments and at first I didn’t get it, but I think you are the only one so far to get it right. I listen to you all the time on the air and you always seem to be articulate and very wise. I’m a big Mike Scinto fan, but he should known better than to disobey the owner. If Mike Scinto was such a poor radio emcee, why wasn’t he fired long before now? From the blogs, it appears he has been at the station quite awhile. That being said, it is extremely clear that Scinto was fired because of his comments regarding the ‘obama regime’ which is doing everything in its power to destroy our great country. The withdrawal must be driving you nuts. Your poor wife. I feel sorry for her having you around all day. Ever consider selling cars for a living?
Well I hope you’re satisfied. You were in front of an audience that you could have helped, but nooo . You had to win your personal battle. There are nearly 400 stations that blast conservative radio 24/7. 90% of talk radio is dominated by rightwingers and they haven’t been fired for damning Obama and the ‘libruls’. Steve you mean to tell me that you could go tell your boss that you’re doing things your way and that you would not expect to get fired?? Also what gave you the right to label me a liberal? Most people label me conservative. How about labeling me for what I am, a seeker of truth whereever it leads me. I wish you were able to discuss this issue without making it political. People in the know, know Mike. Mike told you he wants to do things his way. Ask mike and you might find out that he’s clashed with management at other stations for the same reason. Like I said he’s the best host I’ve seen, but sometimes he’s like a Stephon Marbury, or Chad Johnson when asked to do something. Steve I can appreciate your support for Mike, but like so many you want to use your personal prejudices to explain something that is rooted in entirely different soil. It’s no different than a black person saying they were fired because they were black when the real reason was because the were late for work once too often. I’ve done projects with Mike and he has his good side and his bad side. He’s no different than any of us. Sometimes we all have made mistakes that we’d perfer not to take ownership of….

To draw a parallel between Nazism and American liberalism is reductive at best and obscene at worst. Such a view makes good theater for right-wing commentators, but to speak of liberals in such a manner is to do a disservice to nearly half of our citizens. It also harms the conservative cause by creating still one more false stereotype. Republicans need an accurate understanding of their opponents, and stereotypes about liberals make true understanding—and winning elections—impossible.

You will see your freedoms and your cash disappearreal fast!

Also Bob WDAO has a lot of advertisement. Local churches, organizations, and companies advertise on the station. Health Foods Unlimited has been presenting great information during it’s 9-10 am Tuesday show. Mr Johnson stated that he needed to make changes and I agree. I believe that the station is going to reposition itself in a way that will make it an attractive economical advertising vehicle to the Dayton market. WDAO has always been an advertising value. They are way below the current market rates and have a large audience. I think by dumping the monkey show format and developing shows that address the needs of people today, WDAO will be able to attract business and prove that it does have an audience that contributes greatly to the area economy. I think the station needs to work with The United Way, Salvation Army and other charities on air to raise money as well as with it’s traditional supporters. The station needs to have business owners on air and do live broadcasts on site more often for the advertisers at a discount price. Make the prices so cheap that the advertisers can’t refuse, yet sign them up for longer periods. Giving away air time isn’t giving away air time if it’s gets you more business.

Mike, You have outgrown Dayton just as I did. I left 15 years ago and every time I look back I see more reasons to be glad I left. Ohio is Obama land. Move west where we still believe in life, liberty and freedom as well as “self preservation” instead of socialism. You did your job well there. You will be appreciated elsewhere now that most buckeyes have become zombie minded Obama-ites.
Good luck fellow American!

I don’t listen to radio for the commercials. Never have never will. No commercial for a product has caused me to go buy it. I listen to radio for the programing, and even though I may not agree with everything he has said I will miss his input. If radio was focused on content more than advertising they would probably get more people listening.

Bob540 Thanks Bob. I didn’t call in just to be heard. My purpose was to offer points that could be helpful to my fellow Daytonians. I think the entire Expressions format was kind of railroaded down the wrong track. Scinto had the ability to present quality information and leadership, but I think he and Brown turned it into a monkey show. Look at the comments here by most of Mike’s supporters. I’ve read every one of the post and most of the ones supporting Scinto are racist and filled with incorrect spelling, punctuation errors and combative language. Is this the kind of people Scinto represented? The election of President Obama has certainly bought some of the worst of our society of out the closet. I imagine Mike isn’t proud of some of what has been written in his support. I’m glad DDN allowed this forum. I’m somewhat surprised at the number of people who jumped into the hate arena and have turned this into a racial issue. I believe Mike got fired because Mike always gets Mike fired. He is the most talented talk show host I’ve ever met, but his ego is maybe bigger than his talent. He’s way smarter than most of his audiences, he knows it, reminds them often and punishes those who would challenge him. I can guarantee Mike broke many of Mr. Johnson’s rules on air and got away with it for a long time. If Mike could not go by the rules he should have found somewhere to work where the boss agreed with Mike, or bought his own station and ran it the way he wanted. Personally I hate that he GOT HIMSELF FIRED, but maybe the station can now revamp it’s programming and better serve the community with programs of substance. Mike will continue to spin this issue because the only bad publicity is no publicity., but given time he will realize that he had become a captious talker who lambasted the same topic day after day. He’s hardly the guy I worked with to close the adult book store or get Dr. McGill elected president of the Dayton School board. Had he continued to champion local efforts, aligned himself with local causes and programs, he could have be a real force for good.

Having read most of the comments, its quite clear a great many are for communism. Since they spout so much about the so-called President which in fact happens to be an ILLEGAL ALIEN AND A COMMUNIST PIG, its no wonder the United States is going down the drain.

How’s this for analysis? (White House) What we really want, is to shut down Rush and Savage, but we’ll start with this lesser known conservative, working for a liberal, minority owned radio station, in some place called Dayton.

My question remains: When has WDAO had much in the way of sponsorship? I’ve listened for years and rarely hear any commercial ads. How have they survived?
To Henry Essick: I’ve long thought you are one of the best contributors to the talk programs. I think Mr. Johnson should give you a shot as talk host.

Oldehippy: Surely you must be referring to Bernie Ward, former talk show host of California arrested for child porn - one of the most liberal out there. So what is your point? By the way, just a general question out of curiosity, do old hippies believe in deodorant and showers yet? The young hippies seem to find hygiene measures a waste of time. It’s hot to be “earthy.”

Racism and a different political opinion surfaces in Dayton by a black owner of the radio station. Pure and simple. Freedom of speech is only for Obama supporters or liberal philosophy. I wonder when they start burning books in Dayton. That and talk radio must be on the agenda. Oh, I’m sorry, blacks are never racists. Obama, the most UNQUALIFIED presidential candidate in U. S. history only received 99% of the black vote, but it wasn’t racist. It was his personality….cough, cough.

Rather than talking about the fairness doctrine we need talk about corporate media ownership. Some bean counter in NYC or SC doesn’t need to telling us in Dayton what to think. When one corporation owns stations in over 70 markets our local market doesn’t matter. Back in the old bad days no one could own more than 4 stations and only one per market. Of course some commie faggot Democrat though that up. Our airwaves have been saved by obese druggie pedophiles. Molested 14 year olds be damned.

I feel freedom of speach is a GREAT thing!!!! I listen to the show quite often & call as often as I can. I very rarely agree with the opinions of Mike Scinto & there have been way more times than not that we would call (The prior president George Bush)Bush,George,Your President,That Guy,That Dummy & everything else under the sun. I feel if he was let go because he didn’t agree with our new President that’s his choice. I am sure as a black man I am not going to agree with everything he does.

Mr. Scinto is one of the few blessings of Dayton. Since recently moving to Dayton, I now understand why this city struggles. “Please don’t step on the flowers to point out the weeds”
I pray that another radio station picks Mr. Scinto up soon!
Anyway, what does WDAO stand for? Makes you wonder about righteousness and following the good path.

“Sad to say that any and all criticism of Obama and his administration will be met with cries of racism. This tactic is a tried and effective method of shutting down any and all voices of opposition…”
True.
But…
Only until you EMBRACE the term, instead of trying to defend yourself against it. Do you understand what I am saying?
Give them what they want. Take that label they toss at you and PROUDLY paste it on your forehead.
Watch the reaction…
Trust yourself. Just do it -

This is just the beginning of the (un)Fairness Doctrine being enacted. Although Obama “doesn’t want” the Fairness Doctrine reinstated (mainstream media lie), it will be enacted incrementally. People, your freedom of speech is slowly being eroded away and you seem clueless! Is that cuz you live in Ohio? Check out Drudge story today about top Dem operatives plotting against Rush Limbaugh. You Ohio liberals may love the silencing of conservative talk right now, but it will soon effect everyone.

Sad to say that any and all criticism of Obama and his administration will be met with cries of racism. This tactic is a tried and effective method of shutting down any and all voices of opposition. I am not a racist, I’m a live and let live individual that gets upset when one group tries to push it’s liberal views and life style down my throat which is what’s happening in today’s culture. We need to get back to the CONSTITUTION and the BILL OF RIGHTS which insures the rights of all citizens.

Landslide? Regan won by a landslide, Obama won by ~6% and barely won the majority of the votes. That’s hardly a landslide. Obama won Ohio by less than the number of votes ACORN paid for and were contested by the GOP. Of course the contestation was ignored by the democratic secretary of state.

Sorry Bitter Pirate, your dead wrong! The NAZIs came to power when Germany was in an economic crises. Unemployment was high and inflation was high. The Nazis sought a “Third Way” of managing the economy which was neither capitalism nor communism (gov’t owns the means of production). It very much parallels Obama’s attack on capitalism. More people have died under far let regimes (Stalin, Mao, etc) than right wing governments. There are more paralles between the nazis and american liberals.

The funny thing is that I was invited to attend a friend’s civic group meeting about a year ago. Mike Scinto was the guest speaker. I only listened to music up to that point. He had me hooked on his show. It wasn’t his politics but how he had fun with his callers even on serious subjects. I only called in once. At his speech, half of it was praising the radio station’s history and the man who I suppose ultimately fired him.
