Grief Support Group - Each month at Baker Stevens funeral home, 1500 Manchester Ave., Middletown, there will be a one-hour support group at no cost to participants. Next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at Baker Stevens. Baker Stevens believes that these meetings are important because even after services are over, people need to have some help with the sometimes overwhelming feelings that could remain for days, weeks and months. Meetings are informal with Terry Carlisle, group leader, presenting ideas helpful for those suffering from the loss of a loved one. In addition, participants are invited to share about their losses and to learn from and be supportive of one another. One participant said, "I feel so much better after going to the group because I am understood by the other members. Sometimes my family and friends expect me to 'be over it,' but with this group I can just be myself and be where I am in my grief." The meeting Feb. 16 will feature information on how a grieving person can take small steps to take better care of themselves, even when they do not feel like doing so. Carlisle says, "Persons who are in the hardest stages of loss often believe that the most difficult thing to do is to keep on going, day after day. Reach to Recovery - This is a special visitation program for women with a personal concern about breast cancer. Offered both pre- and post-hospitalization, a woman dealing with breast cancer may ask for a visit from a Reach to Recovery volunteer. Restless Legs Support Group - This support group will provide specialized education as well as support and exchange of information for individuals, their families and friends who suffer from restless legs. Discussion includes an understanding of the various symptoms, new treatment strategies, effectiveness of nonpharmacological treatments, over-the-counter remedies and first-hand experiences with treatments and symptoms. SOAR-Cancer Support Group - Strength, Optimism And Recovery, a women's breast cancer support group, focuses on the concerns and issues unique to breast cancer survivors. The Turning Force - This is a newly formed support group for families and friends of sex offenders which began meeting in March and is meeting every Monday in the Englewood area. Time Out - Community Pregnancy Center will offer this support group designed for single moms. Meeting topics will be provided, but the focus of this group is to get single moms together to offer support to one another. Babysitting will be provided. Group will meet quarterly. Touching Little Lives (Region 1) - At our monthly meetings we collect items made or donated during the month; work on small projects and package layettes. These items are then allocated to seven different local hospitals for needy and sick babies. Our volunteers deliver them to the hospitals. We are always in need of more volunteers who love to sew, knit, crochet or just would like to help by helping collect items at the meetings and dividing up for each hospital. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month in Troy at the First United Church of Christ 120 S. Market St. 6:30- 8:30 P.M.
