Ohio unemployment rate rises in June

COLUMBUS — Ohio's unemployment rate climbed in June, increasing to 6.6 percent from 6.3 percent in May, according to data released on Friday, July 18, by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Non-farm wage and salary employment, however, increased by 7,900, from 5,416,800 in May to 5,424,700 in June as more workers entered the labor force.
"Workers continued to enter the labor force in June at a rate greater than actual hiring demand," Helen Jones-Kelley, ODJFS director, said in a press release.
Nationally, the unemployment rate in June was 5.5 percent, the same as May.
Ohio's June unemployment rate was nearly a percentage point higher than the 5.7 percent unemployment rate in June 2007.
The number of unemployed workers increased to 390,000, up from 380,000 in May. Over the past 12 months, the number of the unemployed has increased by 52,000 from 341,000.
