Gas prices continue to climb and will likely move higher

Karrieann Chase didn't fill up the tank of her Honda Pilot when she stopped for gas in East Dayton on Wednesday. The $2.35 per gallon price, a spike of more than 37 cents over average prices Dayton-area motorists paid a month ago, stopped her mid-tank.

"I'm tired of the seesaw (in gas prices), especially because it's so drastic," Chase, a Jefferson Twp. resident, said. "I don't fill up every time because I'm hoping prices will go down."

Gasoline prices at local service stations had dipped to some of their lowest levels in two years in January, when the average retail price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $1.98, according to the Web site daytongasprices.com.

That dip didn't last long.

The gas price monitoring Web site reported the average local price stood at $2.35 per gallon Wednesday, with a low of $2.18 per gallon at some stations and a high of $2.45 per gallon at others.

Prices will probably move higher due to a return of higher oil prices and the upcoming switch to cleaner-burning warm weather fuels that begins in March, AAA said earlier this month.

Oil prices settled above $60 a barrel for the first time this year on Wednesday after a pipeline and oil field shut down and threatened to cut into supply. Increasing tensions over Iran's uranium enrichment program also helped to boost prices.

The supply disruptions also drove products higher. Heating oil gained nearly 4 cents to settle Wednesday at $1.6816 a gallon, while natural gas futures rose 6 cents to $7.646 per 1,000 cubic feet. Gasoline futures settled at $1.7047 a gallon, up 5.7 cents.
