The U.S. Department of Energy is making available up to $33.8 million to support the development of commercially viable enzymes to enable bio-based production of clean, renewable biofuels.

The DOE is making the funding available part of the president's Twenty in Ten Plan, which seeks to displace 20 percent of U.S. gasoline usage by 2017 through clean energy sources and increased vehicle efficiency.

Extras

This biofuels effort focuses on production from non-food materials and agricultural waste – such as corn stover, switch grass, and prairie grass.

Letters of intent are due Sept. 10, and completed applications are due Oct. 30.

Projects are expected to begin in fiscal year 2008 and continue through fiscal year 2011, pending Congressional appropriations.
