Supercomputer at base will help develop weapons

Staff Report

Thursday, August 30, 2007

The Air Force plans to dedicate a supercomputer it acquired this year to help design and develop weapons systems more quickly.

The SGI Altix 4700 computer is housed in the Major Shared Resources Center, in the Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The government acquired the system this spring, at a $20 million cost to taxpayers, to complement three existing computer systems at the center.

Air Force officials plan a Sept. 4 ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. for the supercomputer, which was brought to the base this spring.

Silicon Graphics Inc., of Sunnyvale, Calif., furnished the supercomputer. More than 1,000 researchers will have access to it to simulate weapons systems and battles, Air Force officials said.
