Union council member Hissong, 69, dies

— City council member and longtime Northmont school district employee John "Jerry" Hissong died Friday night. He was 69.

Mr. Hissong was employed 14 years as a custodian at Union Elementary School and was elected to the city council in 1999. Mr. Hissong also served on the city's water and fire department boards. He was a graduate of Randolph High School.

Mr. Hissong, a lifelong Union resident, is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley, and his daughters, Betty Lou and Gerrie Ann.

Friends and family remember Mr. Hissong as someone who always had time for a conversation with neighbors.

"During Christmas, he just couldn't put enough decorations up. That was the kind of guy he was," councilwoman Betty Terry said.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kindred Funeral Home at 400 Union Blvd. Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
