DAYTON — Pizza store employees who recognized a cell phone number believed to have been used in placing an order that resulted in a delivery woman being robbed at gunpoint Sept. 23 helped police arrest three suspects early Saturday.

The arrests of the men, ages 18, 19, and 22, occurred shortly after 12:10 a.m. during what police believe was another attempt to rob another pizza delivery driver from Donatos Pizza, 1805 N. Main St.

A Donatos manager called police when an employee there took an order for 29 Drake Ave. and noticed the phone number of the caller was the same number used in the Sept. 23 robbery in the first block of Bond Street, a police report said. Bond Street is two streets south of Drake Avenue.

A Dayton police officer, disguised in Donatos delivery gear and using an unmarked car, help catch the suspects, the report said. Another officer was hidden in the back seat of the unmarked car and other officers were stationed at locations surrounding the Drake address.

When the undercover officer arrived in his car on Drake, he saw a man standing on the front porch and two other males sitting on the steps of a vacant house at 33 Drake Ave.

The officer then exited his car, stood on the sidewalk and discovered another man standing behind the man on the porch. Both men were trying to get the officer to come into the front yard, but the officer refused, saying the lighting on the sidewalk allowed him to count change.

As the two men approached the undercover officer, the officer noticed another male approaching from his left side who had been moving around in the darkness near the southwest side of the house.

"Based on this, I dropped the insulated pizza carrier to display my gun, while yelling, 'Dayton police! Get Down!' " the undercover officer wrote in the report. That's when three of the men were arrested and taken to the Montgomery County Jail.

Police found $1 in the hand of one of the men, who told them he was going to use it to pay for the pizza. They also found a pistol and a cell phone with the same number used to make the pizza orders.
