Silicone OK gives some new option

The patient calling Dr. James Apesos at home Sunday didn't have second thoughts about her breast-augmentation surgery. But now she had a first choice.

With Friday's approval for cosmetic silicone implants, the Washington Twp. plastic surgeon rescheduled her Monday surgery for Wednesday. Apesos ordered overnight delivery of silicone implants, which had been permitted only for specific limited purposes since 1992.

Apesos' office called everyone scheduled for breast augmentations Monday, but not to encourage the new implants. "I'm not big on silicone," he said. No implants last forever, and silicone ruptures are harder to detect and more problematic.

Dr. Frank Troha, on the other hand, called himself "an advocate" for silicone implants. Few dispute they create a more natural look and feel than saline implants. Troha is plastic surgery chief at Miami Valley Hospital.

Silicone wasn't banned for breast reconstructions, and "99 percent of my patients choose silicone," Troha said.

Silicone implants cost $500 to $1,600 more per pair than saline implants.
