Dayton police Officer Donald Fink stole the revolver he used to shoot himself from the police property room while he worked there between Feb. 19 and March 5, Dayton Police Director Julian Davis said Wednesday.
"He was assigned to an area where these guns were supposed to be destroyed, so this actual gun that he took had a court order to be destroyed," Davis said.

Detectives located the stolen revolver during a search of Fink's cruiser.
"We're completing an inventory of our firearms down in the property room," Davis said.
Wednesday morning, Dayton police released copies of the radio traffic regarding the shooting. Fink's body armor prevented serious injury.
Fink (panting): "Dispatch, shots fired, hit in the stomach."
Dispatcher: "Where are you?"
Fink: "Livingston. Oaklawn."
Dispatcher: "Were you struck or you fired?"
Fink: "... Suspect ... Dark hoodie ... About 6 foot tall. Unsure about black or white man."
Dispatcher: "What's going on?"
Fink: "I took one round to my stomach."
Davis said he was initially embarrassed by the whole ordeal, but then became "proud of the work that the criminal investigation division did to bring it to a quick resolution."
Fink, 31, is a five-year member of the department. His performance history includes three written commendations, three letters of appreciation, three oral reprimands and two written reprimands.
