Mortgage employee pleads guilty to 25 counts of forgery

DAYTON — An employee of a Vandalia-based mortgage company pleaded guilty Thursday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court to 48 felony counts involving criminal activity committed between April 2002 and February 2003, county Prosecutor Mathias Heck Jr.'s office said.

Mark S. Edwards and co-defendant Mark D. Musselman were accused of obtaining fraudulent mortgage loans by forging appraisals, loan applications and other documents, according to Heck's office. Through Phoenix Funding, Inc., the defendants obtained nearly a dozen loans on behalf of deceased persons, Heck's office said.
Edwards pleaded guilty to 25 counts of forgery over $5,000, nine counts of forgery of $100,000, 12 counts of tampering with records, one count of aggravated theft over $100,000 and one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.
When sentenced, he faces 157 years in prison and more than $365,000 in fines.
Musselman is to go to trial April 2.
