Dayton nursing home closing its doors in June
Wednesday, April 04, 2007
DAYTON — A problem-plagued local nursing home with 115 patients is closing its doors and laying off 139 employees in June.
The Northwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 3650 Klepinger Road, will begin layoffs starting June 8 or shortly thereafter, a center spokesperson said Tuesday.
Extras
The announcement comes after the Ohio Department of Health on March 20 recommended to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services not to conduct a third "revisit," or follow-up survey, of Northwood, said Sara Morman, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Health.
Such a recommendation usually results in a proposal from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to "terminate" or close the facility, Morman said.
"This facility has had a history of non-compliance" with state regulations, Morman said.
In 1994, when the home operated under another name, a patient there accidentally choked to death on a latex glove. In August 2006, Consumer Reports named the home one of the nation's 12 worst facilities. The center was one of 12 homes nationally to make all five of Consumer Reports' watch lists between 2000 and 2005.
The home once operated as Catalpa Manor. Its name changed in 2002.

My Grandmother was there for a very short time, thankfully we found a much better nursing home. All of you can say what you want, but I have seen and heard first hand how this nursing home is! It is sad that it has taken this long for it to be shut down for good!

I am so sorry to hear of the closing. I am a Nursing Home Administrator in Greenville, OH and understand the fear of change. Please know that there are Nursing Homes that still care for their residents and employees just like family. I have a resident that has resided with us for 28 yrs. If I or my staff can be of any assistance please call us at 937-548-1993. Tim Gade,ADM Martha Gade,Owner Robin Gade Haney, RN DON Judy Wollenhaupt, Admissions

The conditions of this nursing home have been horrible for decades. It is a sad that it survived so long, with lawsuits & switching hands (providing a legal dodge & only minor, temporary improvements throughout). Once a reputation like that is built (since at least the ’70s) qualified people avoid or move on when they learn just how entrenched it is in dysfunction. I am beyond grateful for its perminent closure and believe a memorial park is a better use for that property. In memory of Debbie.

to care for the very people who had time to raise and nurture them. Also, if the people responsible for governing nursing homes found all of these violations earlier then how did they get to this point of no return. The nursing staff can only work with what they have. My daughter, who is a nurse there has been working 10-14 hrs per week ( with 3 children at home ) and no overtime (because she is salary) trying to take corrective action to protect the residence and keep a job.

i wish that people would walk a day in the shoes of a person before they past judgment because if you really knew how hard these employess’s worked in the conditions that are forced upon them, then you would be congratulating and sympathizing with them instead of speculating on something that you really know nothing about, and if your concerns are really warranted, then speak on the fact that over 3/4th’s of the people there have families there that are able but won’t take the time (continued)

THINK ABOUT THE EMPLOYEES AT NORTHWOOD WHO HAVE DEVELOPED RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE RESIDENTS. WE SPEND AS MUCH TIME WITH THEM AS IF THEY ARE FAMILY. IT FEELS LIKE OUR FAMILY IS GETTING DIVORCED! BESIDES THE FACT THAT WE WILL BE FACING UNEMPLOYMENT WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT OUR RESIDENTS WELL-BEING. THEY ARE OUR LOVED ONES AND WE DO CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM. WITH THIS CLOSING HAS ANYONE THOUGHT ABOUT HOW DIFFICULT THEIR TRANSITION WILL BE?

I AM EMPLOYED AT NORTHWOOD AND IF YOU DO NOT WORK THERE YOU CAN IN NO WAY COMMENT ON OUR LIFE.WE AS STAFF THERE DO TAKE PRIDE IN THE CARE OF OUR RESIDENTS.YES THERE HAVE BEEN ISSUES,HOWEVER THERE ARE ISSUES IN EVERY FACILITY.WE FEEL WE ARE TARGETED FOR TAKING VERY CHALLENGING RESIDENTS THAT OTHER FACILITIES REJECT.WE REALIZE THEY NEED CARE.WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEM NOW THAT THE COMMUNITY,ODH AND CMS HAVE TURNED THEIR BACKS ON US?DO YOU WANT THEM TO LIVE NEXT DOOR TO YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN?

I believe Dan has a serious problem. There are bad employees of all races. Look at Enron!!!! If you are not going to be a part of the solution you are a part of the problem. We need to try to build people us. At least they are trying to work and not live off tax payors. Lets give them fome credit for that. Dan I will pray for you that you will never have to depend on certain people.

Dan, what you need to do is keep the ignorance to yourself because no one wants to hear it! “Hiring certain people”, what the heck does that mean. Are you really trying to convince people that Northwoods Nursing Home is closing down because they have Blacks/African Americans on their staff, I think not! If you didn’t know, Northwoods is run and owned by White people so if anyone is to blame for this nursing home closing it’s Management not the staff, so explain that one Dan!

And to comment on Dan’s comment about “hiring certain people” what does that mean?Northwood’s employment process was no diffrent from any other nursing home.Or did you really mean to say to have a home in that area was ridiculous, knowing the fact that they might hire some people in that area. The neighborhood has nothing to do with it there is another home not even a mile away and it’s doing great.Northwood’s failure is due to the big wigs. Not the employees.

I have personally worked in Northwood. I was a contracted employee from another business. I went to Northwood for almost two years. I came right around the time new management was there. people please listen the employees of Northwood Nursing home do their jobs. I’m not saying that all of them are the employee of the month, but majority of them have been their for years. The main reason there is such a uproar is the patient to staff ratio. It’s a shame those people will lose jobs.

I did clinicals for 3 days there in 1993. The Home had a lot of non-compliance that I saw first hand. I vowed that I would never work there because of the violations. It’s a shame that within the last 14 years there hasn’t been improvements. Since they haven’t become compliant - even after the new management - it is better they close. You can’t expect to have people trust the last years of their love ones to a facility that doesn’t take pride in care. It is a shame for the loss of employment.

It’s sad to see Northwood closing only because of the jobs that will be lost and the fact that the residents have to be placed somewhere else, but I remember the conditions when it was Catalpa and the things that I heard about it when it was Valarie nursing home. The non-compliance is mostly from the lazy care nurses that are hired on there who could care less about the residents, most are young and irresposible and I pray that all the people who live there find new and be
