Tipp City seeks to honor Bush with street-sign designation

TIPP CITY — Tipp City wants to make the recent visit of President George W. Bush more than a memory — it wants it on a street sign.
The city council has voted 6-1 to start the paperwork to give a portion of Donn Davis Way a secondary designation as George W. Bush Parkway. It's the same route the presidential motorcade zipped down on April 19 when Bush visited Tippecanoe High School for a couple hours.
Extras
The portion of the roadway is from County Road 25A to Kessler-Cowlesville Road.
Councilman Tim Evans said he came up with the idea while on a shuttle bus from the high school to his car following Bush's appearance.
"I was thinking about this once-in-a lifetime experience," Evans said. "I come from a nonpartisan
perspective on this. This is a sitting president of the United States who visited a community of 10,000 people. Most communities our size never get this opportunity."
Councilwoman Vickie Blakey voted "no," saying the street was named for someone local in recognition of contributions to the community.
Donn J. Davis served on the council from 1969 to 1975 and was mayor from 1970 to 1975.
He also was Tipp City Rotary president in the 1950s and started Unidev, a local business, City Manager David Collinsworth said.
Evans said there was no intent to take away from the significance of Donn Davis and his contributions.
Collinsworth said the signs would probably cost a few hundred dollars.

Peg S.: Clark is likely a long-shot for the democratic nomination. He has considerable leadership abilities and military experience. But, he lacks political experience and national name recognition. His run for nomination in 2004 was not successful. He will lose votes by aligning with Clinton and Gore veterans and choosing to favor abortion. But hey, you communicated your opinion.

Dave: I agree. Ike was a good one. Interesting, that you had to go back almost 50 years to find one that met your expectations. That’s a pretty long time. Can you share any insights as to why he met your expectations?
Do you like any candidates for our next presidential election?

I challenge you to name the last president who met your expectations - meaning that he was competent, honest, a good policy maker and a find leader????
Also, I challenge you to name a candidate who will meet your expectations as our next President?
Be bold - let’s hear it!!!

Dan: Please be reminded that the “mission accomplished” remark was made to signal the end of “significant combat activity” in Iraq !
So much for that!
Bush: disgraceful, a joke, deserving of none of our respect. He used that all up long ago. Dan you seem like a smart guy, come see the light !

Old men and women make wars. Young men and women fight them and die. I think our society would be wise to remember this fact by commemorating the names of our brave warriors—NOT the name of a feeble minded, dishonest, phony politician who has never personally experienced the bloody horror of warfare.

i like the comment that someone can’t engage with a “liberal.” in that case, you obviously walk around with blinders and refuse to talk to anyone who believes differently than you. that gets someone far in life…not supporting the president doesnt mean people dont support troops. he should be in jail.

I agree to re-naming the street. But only if it leads to the local graveyard. This will give those who love Shrub a street that bears his name and those of us who think he is a crminal, a permanent reminder of his true legacy.

Leave the street as is, don’t take away from a local person who did good in the community, just because one councilman is star struck. If your going to name street’s after great americans let’s start with the young men and women who have given there life’s to our nation and local community!!!

or is that the reason everyone is leaving. For once celebrate the positive. Too many just want to tear down what is good. If you don’t like it, 1. Vote 2. Quit your belly aching and if that doesn’t work for you, 3. Go find another country, preferably middle-eastern and espouse your views there.

Dan, George W Bush knew that Iraq had no WMDs and was not working with Al Qaeda. He made the conscious choice to “fix the intelligence” around the policy to invade Iraq. Read the Downing Street Minutes at http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/1.

Yes this is exactly what we need………a relic to one of the worst presidents this country has ever had!!!
How about a road sign for every person that has lost his or her life fighting a war that never should have been. Sounds like a good idea right, except for the fact that as long as Mr. Bush is in charge of this country, that number will climb to more streets than we even have to name.
Wake up people. If President Bush is put up on pedestal (or sign), it needs to be one for impeachment!!!

All I gotta’ say is that all you Bush-haters will probably be the conscientious objectors migrating to Canada when you finally get your way, and we pull out of Iraq and leave Al-Qaeda wide open for planning, attacking, and taking over what you leave of our country. You’re all idiots if you think for one minute that Al-Qaeda will just sit down and do nothing when we pull out of Iraq. We were caught sleeping once, let’s not be caught sleeping a second time. “Fool me once, shame on me…

Someone close to me was in Iraq helping to establish the new government there. He was amazed at some of the reports from the media in America and how his first-hand observations and experiences were often 180 degrees different than what the media reported. We must be aware that as the next presidential election draws near we can expect to hear all sorts of SPIN, especially from the party not in power as they attempt to sway the minds of Americans. It seems it’s working already.

Dan, thank you for defending your position. I do not live in Tipp but I would be proud to have a street named after President Bush. My son was an Intell analyist in Iraq. I listen to his stories-not to the mainstream media. My son has no regrets at all. I refuse to engage in a discussion with the liberals (progressives). If they manage to win the presidential elections in 2008 then I’ll accept it with a grain of salt and thank them when our country is reduced to ruins. Bless President Bush!

Had the President delivered some sort of landmark speech or given some real answers in Tipp City, I’d say he might possibly deserve some sort of recognition. But a closed-door “discussion” of the Iraq War complete with buzzwords and phony talking points is no reason to go renaming streets. Tipp residents: Anyone find it fishy that this news wasn’t broken until after the vote on the tax increase for capital improvements? I so would have voted NO if I had known this news yesterday.

DAN: The military was 1st mobilized in the Afghan/Pak theater, but then the faulty intelligence regarding WMD in Iraq had everyone in a tizzy so we mobilized large units into Iraq and lost focus on the real reason we were in the Middle East (to hunt down and bring to justice Osama)

RE: Dan regarding the war on terror.
Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism prior to the US entry into Iraq. I’m all for the War on Terror but it needed to be centered in Afghanistan and Pakistan where the Taliban had it’s stronghold. Instead of usurping Saddam we should’ve focused ALL our attention on Osama Bin Laden, found him, and put 2 bullets into his brain.

Are you for real? You want to name a street after the worst president that this country has had. Please get a life and move on. He might deserve a prison named after him to put all his cronies in, but not a street. How about honoring a soldier from Ohio that has died in Iraq? It would be much better use of taxpayer money.

Tim: Please be reminded that the “mission accomplished” remark was not directed towards the end of our fight against terrorism. Our President has repeatedly said that the fight on terrorism will be a long and difficult one. No one wants to see our troops die, but none of us want to see another attack on our soil either. What would we say, if our President pulled the troops out of Iraq based on popular appeal, and Al Queda re-mobilized, attacked a major US city and killed 30,000?

What an insult to Donn Davis! A president comes into town to blow some hot air, and they want to name part of a street after him. Mr. Bush probably didn’t know what town he was in until an aide whispered it into his ear just before his speech.

Tammy: That is the point. Our president did care enough about the people of Tipp City to take an entire day out of his presidency to come to the small community and openly share his thoughts. That is a big deal and we should respect him for it whether or not we agree or disagree with his policies and decisions.
Perhaps, there is a compromise that avoids any issue with trivializing the honor that was previously bestowed upon Mr. Donn Davis?

Are you kidding me? The road was named Donn Davis Way for a reason - to honor a local person for the contributions he made to the area. Don’t take that honor away from him or his family or disgrace others who have been given the same honor for a man who cares nothing about the people in communities like Tipp City.

Could it be that our country has been saved from much bloodshed due to terrorist attacks that were averted? We can count the numbers that die, yet we cannot count the numbers that have been saved. Simply counting the numbers on one side of the ledger might be an unfair way to judge a decision. Hypothetically, if you were president during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, would you have waged war on terrorism (that seemed like the appropriate decision then),or done nothing?

Street name ?? How about renaming the high school. George needs all the help & recognition he can get. Here in his HOME STATE of Texas there’s currently a movement to remove his name from the state line road signs that welcome people to Texas. How bad does a president have to be to have that going on while he’s still in office? It’s interesting that the good people in Tipp our working on honoring him while the people from his own state are working on removing any connection with him.

Dave: What none of us know, or ever will know, is how many Americans have been saved since 9/11 as a result of our country’s war against terrorism. It may be no one, or it may be tens of thousands. What would you have done, if you were president during the 9/11 attack? Would you have stood by and done nothing? Or, would you have gone to war against terrorism in an effort to protect your country from future attacks?

Steve: Don’t forget that Congress (republicans and democrates alike) understood the intelligence about the weapons of mass destruction and they all voted unanimously to wage war on Iraq. So, if our president was misled by that intelligence, then our congress (republicans and democrats alike) were also misled. And if being misled makes our president a liar, then everyone in Congress must also be liars.

What an absurd idea. If you’re going to name it for George War Bush, Why not just call it Stupid Swaggering Arrogant Punk Street? And yes, Bush IS a liar and a fool. Respect is earned, not just handed out. What has this jackass done to earn respect? Caused the deaths of over 3,000 American soldiers and countless other casualties and wasted hundreds of billions of our tax dollars that could have been used here at home to help our citizens with education and health care. Incompetent Street!

None of us really know the truth about the war and the pre-war intelligence. Our perceptions are based on the spin that is communicated by the media and the political parties. And to really know the truth is to know the intelligence. If we were to know the intelligence, then it would be compromised. We can only have opinions. So, again to call our President a liar is disrespectful. And honoring his visit is a way to pay respect.

Is there a Starbucks or a McDonalds on that road? The reason I ask is because if I understand the story correctly they are naming the road because the president drove down it. Well then why not name it after stores that are on the road as well? Make a half mile area for McDonalds, then another mile or so for Meijers or Starbucks. That makes about the same sense! Also why are we naming roads more than one name? Isn’t one name hard enough to find on a map when your lost?

I do not understand this desire to rename everything to “honor” some politician or other. What is the purpose? So someone who used to go by way of Don Davis Way can’t find the address he is looking for? Do they think that the politican (or his family) will swell with pride every time they never go near George W. Bush Parkway?
