Air Force Capt. Steven Quillman and his wife, Casey, of Riverside were both "brats" when they were children.

Now their four daughters are.

Extras

The oldest, Mandy, 16, is proud of that term used to describe children whose parents serve in the military.

"My dad goes and fights for our freedom," Mandy said of her 35-year-old father, who returned from Iraq a week ago.

Growing up military is the subject of a 90-minute documentary film, BRATS: Our Journey Home, which will be shown at 7:30 p.m. today at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. There are believed to be at least 219,000 adults in Ohio who were military brats.

Among the people interviewed in the film is Olga Ramos, whose father, retired Brig. Gen. Antonio J. Ramos, retired from the Air Force in 1999 while stationed at Wright-Pat.

The documentary is the work of independent filmmaker Donna Musil, an Army brat who wanted to capture military brats sharing intimate memories about their unusual childhoods — growing up on military bases around the world and then struggling to fit into an American lifestyle with which they have little in common.

For a brat, even the simple question of "Where are you from?" can be difficult to answer because many move frequently in their youth.
