Antioch College won't renew contracts for 13 of 60 administrators and eight hourly staff workers, effective Friday.

Spokeswoman Lynda Sirk declined to elaborate on which positions were cut until the college had a chance to notify staff who are losing their jobs.

None of the cuts are faculty positions and were anticipated before the college's recent declaration of financial exigency, Sirk said. Antioch plans to announce more details this morning, she said.

"They've been kind of telling people one by one," said Chris Hill, the faculty spokeswoman who has taught media arts at the college for 10 years.

Earlier this month, Antioch University's board of trustees decided to close the college because it had run out of money. The college will close in July 2008, and officials plan to renovate the campus, restructure the college and reopen in 2012.

Antioch College, a private, liberal arts college founded in 1852, is the flagship for Antioch University, which has five other campuses in Ohio and on the East and West coasts.

Meanwhile, alumni have raised $425,000 in cash and pledges towards a $40 million goal to try to keep the college open.

They raised the bulk of the money during an 18-hour fundraising sprint over their recent alumni reunion held in Yellow Springs last weekend, when nearly 700 alumni flocked to the campus to challenge the board's decision to close the college.
