DAYTON — The Miami Conservancy District has picked a Columbus engineer to come up with plans and cost estimates to modify four low dams on the Great Miami River for safety improvements.
That package could include bypasses, passages through the dams and recreational spots. It is hoped any modifications will make the dams passable to watercraft such as canoes and kayaks.
Extras
Burgess & Niple Inc. of Columbus will study the Dayton low dam at Monument Avenue.
Burgess & Niple also will perform a preliminary evaluation of the Tait Station low dam off Carillon Boulevard in Moraine, the South Montgomery County low dam off Hydraulic Road in West Carrollton and a low dam in Hamilton off Neiland Boulevard.
According to the Conservancy, design work will begin in August and last six months. At that point, the Conservancy could be in a position by next spring to receive bids and award a contract for modifications to the Dayton low dam, said Kurt Rinehart, chief engineer with the Conservancy.
He said the Conservancy reviewed proposals from three companies to make the selection. Burgess & Niple has previous experience in safety modifications and hydraulic structures, he said.
