DAYTON — School opens today in Dayton, and the city school district will look a bit different.
Some of the changes are driven by budget cuts resulting from the defeat of a levy in May. Some shuffling is part of the school construction program. Here are some of the big differences students may notice:
Extras
• Edison Elementary, which serves grades K to 7 with single-gender classrooms, has moved into Fairview Middle School, 2408 Philadelphia Drive. Edison students and staff will occupy one part of the building, while Fairview's remaining eighth-grade class will be in another. A New Edison school is being constructed in its original location at 228 N. Broadway St.
• The district's preschool center, formerly on Gettysburg Avenue, has moved to Jackson Center, 329 Abbey Ave. The center will be known as the Dayton Public Schools Preschool Academy at Jackson Center.
• The Montessori program has been consolidated at Franklin Montessori, 2617 E. Fifth St. Horace Mann, and Jefferson schools will no longer offer Montessori-style instruction.
• Dayton Technology Design High School, an alternative high school targeting students at risk for dropping out, has moved from Jackson Center. The high school will now operate out of the new Central State West facility at 840 Germantown St.
• The Charity Adams Earley Academy and Dayton Boys Prep Academy have added fourth-grade classes this year.
• The district has four new principals:
Mitzi Sanders moves from assistant principal to principal at Cornell Heights Elementary School (the school will become Rosa Parks Elementary when it moves in October).
Lisa Minor moves from assistant principal to principal at Kemp Elementary School.
James Fowler, former assistant principal at Wogaman Elementary School, is the new principal at Kiser Elementary School.
Marilyn Croker, former principal of Allen Elementary School, moves to Patterson-Kennedy Elementary School.
