ENGLEWOOD — The day her body was found, police knew little about the young woman whose body was dumped on a grassy slope near the Hoke Road entrance to eastbound Interstate 70.

Twenty years later they don't know much more.

Extras

They know she had two fresh tattoos — a rose and a unicorn above each breast — but otherwise looked clean-cut and well-nourished. Her brown curly hair was held back by a blue bandana. Her teeth were cared for.

She was between the ages of 17 and 25 when she was strangled by an equally unknown killer.

Her name for the past

20 years has been Jane Doe — FBI case number U-260043704. And although her image and description exist in police files and on The Doe Network (www.doenetwork.org/), those who might remember her as a living, breathing soul have not come forth to claim her.

Jane Doe is one of seven people whose bodies have been found in the Miami Valley since 1970, with no identity to link them to their families or their pasts.

But for the police of Englewood, where murder investigations are rare, this Jane Doe is a special case and a long-running frustration. "I think of this case often. She was someone's daughter or sister," said Det. Alan Meade, who joined Englewood's detective section in 2003.

Meade said the department continues to get two or three leads a year in the case, mostly

from missing persons reports issued by the FBI. "But nothing has ever panned out," he said.

"Someone out there knows Jane Doe. We just hope that someday someone steps forward."
