The University of Dayton's master plan is in flux, but the goal — to create a campus of three parts, all integrated with similar architecture and establishing a large, walkable community for the public and students — is not.

"From one end of the campus to the other, we want people to know that they've arrived at the University of Dayton," Campus Planner Rick Perales said Thursday.

Extras

It begins at Campus West, one-half of 50 acres of former NCR Corp. land that UD purchased in 2005, situated near the Stewart Street bridge at Patterson Boulevard.

A gateway there will funnel people between main campus and UD Arena on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.

At Mid-Campus — the vacant brownfield between Brown and Stewart streets — a public "front porch" into campus will include the University Center for the Arts and an arts plaza. An alumni and conference center could feature lifelong learning classes popular at UD.

Brown Street will become a pedestrian-friendly "college avenue," Perales said. A large structure encircling the intersection of Brown and Stewart streets will be UD's "front door," he said.

On the historic core campus, buildings will be razed, renovated and relocated.

Roesch Library, the historic Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and several residence halls will be renovated.

Other plans include building a "sustainable" residence hall (a building that's sustainable is protective of the environment) and overhauling athletic fields. A campus greenway — pedestrian and bike paths — will link it all.

The plan will be financed through a combination of university resources, fundraising, state and federal grants, sponsored research funding and public-private partnerships, UD said. UD has not determined the project's cost.

It will take five to seven years for the developments to come together, and before that UD must remediate the soil on Mid-Campus and finish demolishing Building 26 on Campus West.

The building is the site of a former World War II-era research project. Pieces of the building will be saved for an exhibit at Carillon Historical Park.

UD will present its master plan at campus forums Monday through Wednesday and incorporate feedback before presenting it to the board of trustees Oct. 18 for approval.

During the menningitis warning I visited the main bathroom in KU by the cafeteria and there was no hand soap in either container. Trashcans were full of papertowels. Imagine all the cafeteria workers and students that went through that bathroom that day during the first days of class and did not wash their hands. During the recent assault scare, we left class at 9:00 and there was no security in site in the parking lot. But if they are giving out tickets, they’re like roaches at midnight . .

For older folks, those with physical challenges and people rushing from work to evening class — we need more parking. When there’s rain, snow and ice, it is worse. Think about hurrying back to your car in the dark with rain/snow/ice after class ends. How about a high rise parking garage with a penthouse alumni center? Funny, when the menningitis outbreak discussion began at the start of this semester — and it was in the newspaper and on the local news — I visited the main bathroom

The concept looks awesome. Dayton city “leaders” need to take note of what a visionary organization can do to revitalize an area. The City of Dayton and the Miami Valley need a master plan that focuses on economic development and job creation through attracting businesses. The University of Dayton can be a catalyst for this, but it is only one piece in a comprehensive region-wide strategy.

Kudos to the leaders at the University of Dayton for leading the way!

They need better PARKING. I stopped attending classes there because of it. The parking office and “police officers” are the worst. Wake up U.D.

Siquomb, UD is doing the right thing concerning Campus West. Earlier, Pres Curran said that there are so many projects going on in Dayton right now, the developers and community leaders need to come together and work on a master plan together. They don’t want to duplicate what might go in at the Fairgrounds or in Ballpark Village. They need to coordinate their efforts. Also, remember this is just a draft. It’s going to change!

It’s really sad that UD has not planned any tennis court facilities on its campus. Dayton has a strong history of tennis and an active tennis community. All the elite colleges big and small offer beautiful tennis facilities to their students, faculty and the community. More Universities in the region are pouring resources into their tennis facilities because they understand the attraction it offers - UD is behind the ball in this area.

The initial concept and design look impresive and would totaly transform the current campus and community. Also to consider, the more attractive a community is, the more life, growth and prosperity there is for everyone. Dayton, as a whole, would greatly benefit from this vision for the University Of Dayton!I hope to see this one!

It is always good to see a University move forward; I’ve read posts that it is great to be a Flyer. There is the ongoing debate on UD not playing Wright State.

I have tickets to OSU basketball; I have seen the Buckeyes play in a number of venues. Some years ago the Buckeyes and the Flyers played home & home series for four years. The great UD fans pelted us with debris & obscenities throughout the games. One person in our party had his OSU jacket ruined by a UD fan that got a large amou

Fantastic for UD and Dayton, but please don’t forget to reserve some of Campus West for Mike Kelly Stadium. Let’s bring big-time football back to Dayton!

Fantastic for Dayton and UD! Just don’t forget to setaside some of Campus West for Mike Kelly Field. Let’s bring back big-time football to Dayton and Ohio.

I’m all for renovations, as long as the mural of Don Reynolds Sr. remains on the back porch at Timothy’s!

I like the draft plan – it’s a good start.

They might consider:

  1. Addressing the parking problem with two parking garages. One could be built west of Miriam hall and another east of Kettering Labs.

  2. Widening the Stewart Street Bridge - add an additional lane to the south side of the bridge.

  3. Finding a better use for the land where the Alumni building is proposed.

Nice plans I guess, the addition of walkable elements and greenspace is great. But I am disappointed that plans for “Campus West” are left out. The community was led to beleive this would be a massive redevelopment of that land, with mixed-use housing, retail, etc. I realize they may announce that later, but I can’t help feeling disappointed there isn’t more meat on these bones.

Interesting comments about parking! For all the good things that are going on at UD, the public face of the University is PARKING TICKETS! Pretty sad! Maybe they ought to take the ticket book and pencil away from Parking Services and spend their time on a reasonable paking plan that enables students, parents, & the general public to get where they need to go without the threat of PARKING TICKETS!

Reminds me of this comment by an old Daily News reporter about a similar UD proposal nearly 40 years ago: “Methinks it’s mostly pie-ous in the sky-ous.”

The new ideas look great. I just hope that they upgrade instead of change. There’s no mention of the Guetto, but I like the mention of a “front porch” approach. Don’t ever forget the front porch. It’s what brought us to campus and keeps us sending our kids.

BTW…I could not care less about parking. Keep it walking friendly and bike friendly. Kudos to forward thinking.

WOW! Once more UD is totally BLIND to the crushing need for PARKING!!!! Walking campus is great if you are young and healthy and can walk 2 miles for parking. What they need is a parking garage where they are proposing to build an “alumni” building! What in the world do they need an ALUMNI BUILDING FOR? BLINDERS ON - the ignore the parking….

This is fantastic news for UD and the community at large!

Now an important gateway to Dayton will become top notch with the sports complex development by I-75 to the riverfront development by the Stewart Street bridge to Montgomery County Fairgrounds renovations and Genesis project by Miami Valley hospital and the Brown Street renaissance neighbored by the up and coming South Park Historic District.

It’s a great day to be a Daytonian and a Flyer!
