DAYTON — Scarlet, one of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery's red foxes, has died.
"She was clearly a favorite of our visitors and our staff," Mark Mazzei, curator of live animals.

Scarlet — who was one of the featured animals of this year's Boonshoft Gala, which raised more than $40,000 benefitting the museum's animals — died Friday.
She was about 14, which museum officials said is beyond a red fox's life expectancy in captivity of 10 to 12 years. She came to the museum in 1994 as a 7-month-old kit from a rehabilitation center in Kansas.
Sterling, the gray phase red fox that shared an enclosure with Scarlet, is still on exhibit and is adjusting, museum officials said.
Scarlet suffered from arthritis, complications due to an enlarged heart and kidney and liver failure, Mazzei said.
"Advances in veterinary medicine provide the means to counter many of these otherwise debilitating conditions," he said.
In addition to medication, Scarlet received laser treatments to help her arthritis.
Mazzei said many in the community contribute to the quality of life of the animals at the museum by donating their professional services, providing financial support or contributing items to the Boonshoft Animals' Wish List.
Those interested in contributing in some way should contact Mazzei at (937) 275-7431, ext. 118.

I remember when Scarlett the fox went poo. Then it went to sleep. Then it woke up. Then it ate. Then it sat around.
