Ohio voters may think Democrat Ted Strickland is doing a bang up job as governor but they sure don't want to see him just a heartbeat away from the Oval Office in the White House.

Results released today from a new Quinnipiac University poll found just 29 percent of Ohio voters think Strickland is qualified to be vice president while 49 percent think he isn't and another 23 percent don't know.

The poll also found that just 25 percent of the voters would like to see Strickland as the Democratic vice presidential candidate next year while 53 percent wouldn't and 22 percent don't know.

The results come amidst speculation that U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, might pick Strickland, who last week endorsed her, as a runningmate. Strickland has said he's not interested but that hasn't ended the speculation.

Even if he ended up on the ballot with Clinton or another Democrat, the poll results indicated his presence wouldn't give the Democrats a lock on the state in the general election. The poll found that 13 percent said Strickland's presence would make them more likely to vote for the Democratic ticket, while 11 percent said it would make them less likely and 68 percent said it wouldn't make a difference.

The results did show that Strickland's presence would help the Democratic ticket among independent voters. Among these voters, a group crucial to a presidential candidate's success, 16 percent said Strickland's presence would make them more likely to support the Democrats while 9 percent said it would make them less likely and 66 percent said it would make no difference.

Results from the same poll showed that as governor Strickland, 66, a former U.S. congressman, remains very popular with 61 percent of the voters approving his performance and just 15 percent disapproving.

The results don't necessarily contradict each other, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Voters have very different criteria for very different offices," Brown said.

The poll was based on interviews with 1,231 voters conducted from Nov. 6 through Sunday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

I think Ted would make a excellent vp, but I don`t want to lose one of the best governors we have ever had. The people George W., who was less qualified and will go down as the worst president in U.S. history.

Listen the only way Ohio going to get more jobs if they change the law regarding employment in the state of OH. There going or even more people are going to leave the state. Look at the Springfield City Schools there going to lose almost 500 students the school district within the next five years. We need to change the way we fund our schools as well.

One thing in Ohio that everyone seems to agree on is the mess that Taft the Daft left, I also agree with EJ on the City of Dayton’s new policy of tax, tax, tax, of course it is coming to a city near you in the not so distant future !!!

This is for Joe….. Are you that dumb to believe ANYBODY would want the two term limit dropped? Nobody in either party would stand for that.
Course, that could change if Hilda were elected. I’m sure she’s buddy buddy with Chavez and would seek his guidance on how to change the constituion.

Ohio needs a governor that will restore our economy by cutting taxes and passing right-to-work laws. Only then will businesses stop fleeing, and maybe even return to, the great State of Ohio.

Strickland will not do this and, therefore, Strickland is not the answer to Ohio’s problems. Let him go.

Ted wants to get out of the state of Ohio as soon as possible, he already raised taxes to cover all the people drawing unemployment. He is driving NOHIO right in to the ground. By the way, I heard that makes 3 people that endorse Hitlery, Bill, Chelsea, and now Ted.

I would be very disappointed if Ted left us for the White House so soon. Just remember, there are two kinds of republicans, rich ones and stupid ones.

Ted Strickland has done a good job in Ohio since taking office last January. He has much to overcome after eight years of Mr. Taft and eitht years of Mr. Voinovich before that. He needs a full term at least to deal with Ohio’s problems- especially in education. His goal to make college education affordable to all Ohio citizens is praiseworthy, but it will take time to accomplish. Ohio now needs stability. At a future time, Ted Strickland should consider a national office.

I do not think that Ted Strickland is ready to be VP. He has been our governor for almost a year and has much to do to clean up the mess left by eight years of Mr. Taft and also eight years of Mr. Voinovich. His education goal to give more Ohioans the opportunity of a college education at affordable cost is praiseworthy. He may, however, be doing too much at once. I am one of the 61% who support him and Chancellor Fingerhut. However, I am worried about my school’s retrenchment…..

We need a governor that is willing to speak out against the Wagner Act (and related legislation) and promote right-to-work laws in Ohio. As a republican, I am disappointed that my party is not willing to do so. It’s time to level the playing field between business and unions such that business returns to Ohio.

Strickland has been in office for a short time. He needs to clean up the mess that Taft’s two terms created. It takes time to repair the damage. It doesn’t matter what party caused the mess, we owe it to the incoming party to give them time to correct it. He’s not had enough time as Gov. to determine whether he could be a viable candidate. He needs some successes at the state level before moving to the federal level. It’s not his time for Washington just yet and may never be. Let’s see in time.

Didn’t Strickland say that the first thing he would do in office is find a constitutional way to fund our schools? How’s that comming? With all the local school levy trouble around here, I figure it hasn’t gotten done yet!

Phil and Dave would rather see the two term limit dropped, so that Bush could run again and pick Taft as his new running mate..So that the 15 percent(Phil and Dave included) who approve of Dumb and Dumber could run the country into the ground even more so, while the Chinese and the Saudis, are buying this country more and more, while killing us with their shoddy products..

First, Strickland needs to clean up the mess in Ohio left by Taft. Then he can worry about the national spot light. But first, turn Ohio around to prove he is a worthy choice.

Dayton is in a very bad position. Alot of workers with no skills and no promise of new jobs even if they had any skills. The city government is sliding into a socialist mindset. Taxes, taxes, and more taxes. They tax the middle class (there are no rich people in Dayton) and redistribute to the poor causing everyone to be poor. Most poor choose to be poor. I deal with these people daily. They are just looking for the free ride and they are getting it. Good work city government.
