A 16-year-old Centerville boy was killed Tuesday night when he apparently tried to cross northbound Ohio 741 (Springboro Pike) while riding a bicycle, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was riding a BMX-style bike alongside a male friend who was on another bicycle when the victim was hit about 7 p.m. just north of Orchard Run Road, Miami Twp. Maj. John DiPietro said.

A Montgomery County coroner's investigator pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

The victim was sent about 20 feet through the air on impact and was hit by a second northbound vehicle, the major said.

The other boy was not hit, DiPietro said.

Neither the driver of a Nissan Altima, the first vehicle to hit the boy, nor the second vehicle appeared at fault, DiPietro said.

Both boys were crossing the roadway where there was no signage or crosswalk, DiPietro said, noting that the victim's bike had no reflectors and he was not wearing a helmet.

According to other BMX-style bike riders who came to the scene and identified themselves as friends, the victim and the other boy were on their way to a nearby skate park to ride or compete with other area riders.

The friends said the victim rode and did "freestyle" tricks on his bike everyday.

They said they also told police at the scene that it would help if there were more parks that allowed bicycle riders. They also said it would help if there were more crosswalks along Springboro Pike.

"Just looking at the bike gives me chills," one of the riders, 23-year-old Trevor Gay, said of the victim's crumpled bicycle.
