A Miami East High School student was seriously injured Thursday morning when his car, traveling at a high rate of speed, went off Troy-Urbana Road, Miami County Sheriff's deputies said.

David Gawronski, 16, of Casstown was westbound when he lost control of a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am around 9:12 a.m. in the 1800 block of Troy-Urbana Road. The car went off the right side of the road and hit a tree, deputies said.

Based on calculations from the accident scene, investigating deputies listed the car's speed at 109 mph.

Gawronski was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday afternoon she had no information she could release on Gawronski's condition.

Deputies said he had left the high school shortly before the crash.

Schools superintendent Todd Rappold said counselors and administrators were available to talk with students who were "shocked" to learn of the accident during the school day.

"Our thoughts are with the family right now," Rappold said.
