Warnings of winter's wrath didn't stop the Miami Valley from going about its business Saturday, driving over slush-covered roads to the malls and the movies.
Ohio Highway Patrol posts reported a far-busier-than-usual day, but the incidents reported were, for the most part, cars sliding off the road and fender-benders.
Extras
One major accident occurred about 10:40 p.m. on southbound Interstate 75 in downtown Dayton. Two cars have flipped and the Grand Avenue exit ramp is blocked.
A Dayton Mall guest services spokesperson said early Saturday that "as long as there's business, we'll be open," adding that there was plenty of business Saturday.
"It's a very busy day, all things considered," she said.
Despite continued cautions that the weather would get worse overnight, both the University of Dayton and Wright State University are playing their home basketball games against Coppin State and Miami University respectively, though Wright State cancelled the postgame alumni event.
Dayton-Montgomery County Libraries kept its branches open, but Greene, Champaign and Clark counties closed theirs; the National Museum of the United States Air Force stayed open, but cancelled its evening holiday concert.
The hit-or-miss cancellations made Saturday a guessing game as to whether schedules would be kept. In most cases, businesses stayed open and schools shut down weekend activities.
Both the Clark and Champaign County Sheriff's offices reported they were on a level one snow emergency Saturday afternoon. Both reported hazardous roads with blowing and drifting snow, as well as icy conditions. Both offices also urged caution while driving.
Clark County dispatchers handled between six and eight traffic accidents by 2:15 p.m. Saturday, none involving injuries. Champaign County dispatchers reported about 10 accidents, none of which involved injuries.
The forecast calls for continued bad weather throughout the night, with snow changing to freezing rain.
Winter storm warnings for 17 Ohio counties, including Montgomery, Greene, Darke, Champaign, Miami and Preble, are in effect through Sunday.
A two-car accident on Southbound Interstate 75 near Ohio 123 in Franklin brought traffic to a standstill at around 2:40 p.m. Traffic started flowing again around 3:30 after tow trucks moved the vehicles involved. There were no injuries reported.

Could you imagine the media frenzy if we got a snowstorm the equivalence of the Blizzard of ‘78!!!! I’m sure next month on the 30th anniversary we’ll see alot of photos again. It was a storm you had to live through in order to understand just how bad it really was. The media panics over a 2-4” snow today (something we get 3-5 or more times a year), I doubt we would have any TV programming for 2-3 days if another Blizzard of ‘78 hit again. It was nice getting a week off of school though.

The BBGD (Browns Backers Of Greater Dayton) bus trip to the Browns/Bills was cancelled by the bus company due to the weather. I was so looking forward to the game but the way it looked I wouldn’t have seen much of it anyway.

Every year it’s the same crap… it snows, drive slow, leave early, take a cell. blah, blah, blah. The idea that the Vandalia police and the OSHP thinks this has to be mentioned every single, solitary time it snows means that they think we in the Miami Valley suffer from a severe lack of common sense.

J. Snow: Yea, I know. Chlorine is spelled as such, not “clhorine”. Also, falalities is spelled “fatalities”. Thought I’d correct this before you spazzed (spelled correctly?) out and had to point out that not only do I kill people in wintry traffic, I do it due to my limited spelling ability. Not much going on in Springfeild(?), so I thought I’d help you be the control freak and conspiracy theorist you enjoy being. Snow up to your a— yet? Hope so, it’ll freeze your lack of “synapsis” brain.

J Snow: You part of the “drive-by-media”?..reading something into common sense about living in winter that all of us missed? The comment of “plan accordingly” means just that…driving in it also. I believe your gene pool needs a little clhorine, as YOU “contribute to the senseless traffic falalities in this county by driving if they were invincible and wreckless in their travels”. J.Snow: not much to truthfully say locked in his/her house due to weather panic, so let’s make it up. Bored?

I am amazed. I was in Colorado last week during one of their winter storms, my God. If you have ever been thru a “snow event” in the Rocky Mountains, you have know that people in Ohio blow this out of proportion. In the mountains they received in some places 5 FEET of snow, Denver received about a foot. At any rate instead of the news people saying “stay at home, stay off the roads” the news people out west were saying “Its a great weekend to head to the mountains to shread some powder”.

As lifelong Buckeyes now spending our first of hopefully many winters in northern Michigan, we received in our first winter storm more snow than an entire Ohio winter provides. Budget restrictions in our county do not allow for the plowing of any roads except primary ones on weekends or holidays, so better winter tires quickly became a top priority. However, I must say it is enjoyable living in an area that embraces winter rather than fear it.

I think Phil should be commended for his ‘holiday’ tradition. Every man should be able to shart himself in peace. It reminds me of the pioneer in this area, Phil Mickelsharts. My only concern is that the liberals will see your post and send Gore out to condemn you for contributing to global warming. Snow is great, but what we have today is just a sloppy mess. Eat, drink, and be sharty. HOHOHO

Why on earth do you care what I do? Maybe I’ll eat two crock pots of beans today, then come to your house. Not everyone shares the same values as you. Just b/c you think snow is great, doesn’t mean everyone else does. So don’t criticize me or my sharting.

For all you people who believe you can drive 60 + miles an hour in anything, just go down and qualify for Daytona and leave people alone who are trying to drive slow and carefully with our families in the car. Stay off the butt of my car or make sure your car insurance is up to date.

It is December. Most of you were born north of the equator were you not? SNOW is what happens this time of year. Put the plastic snowmen you have on your porches away and go out and build a real one. Take a walk, enjoy the quiet and the beauty of the white blankets on the lawns and streets. Why on earth would you sit home and eat a crock pot of beans and be proud of it? You can do that in June where the windows can be open and you can air out the stench. ENJOY the snow, it will be gone soon!

I have a tradition whenever we get snowed in. I make a huge pot of beans, and shart myself the entire day. I try to see if I can eat an entire crockpot. It’s fun, but my house stinks for a couple of days.

I love snow (to a point), but the winds on Sunday will be brutal. After living three years in North Dakota and being raised in Nebraska, the winters here are quite mild by comparison and the idea of closing schools because the roads are a bit icy or it might snow is frankly a bit silly. By our wimpy standards, they would have no school at all in the northern plains from Nov through March!

Springfield Residents,
Let’s congratulate Paul for surviving the blizzard of ‘78 and surviving the “weenie winter snow storm” as he put it, that we have experienced the past 24 hours. However, I regret to inform you, it is people like Paul that contribute to the senseless traffic fatalities in this county by driving as if they are invincible and wreckless in their travels. This weather may not impact those who experience it regularly, but those who are not used to it should drive cautiously.

Winter is exciting. Especially when it’s white and you sit in the comfort of your couch looking at the snow falling down. As a person that works outdoors plowing snow for 16-18 hours straight in blizzards like this one though, I have to say that it’s anything else but fun. I just want to advice people to stay off the roads if possible, enjoy the view from their window and let all of us “supermen” take care of cleaning all this mess. Happy Holidays!

We started out this morning and realized how bad the roads were. It didn’t deter us from finishing our Christmas shopping. My husband just drove with caution and we didn’t venture far. It’s winter, snow happens. I don’t like it much, though. We’ll be staying in tomorrow!

Why all of the concern about snow and ice? It’s winter! Plan accordingly. I grew up in Dayton/Kettering in the 60/70’s, snowed all the time. Experienced (and worked outside in) the blizzard of 78’. Suicide Hill at Community Golf Course all of the time. Your “nanny state” now is directing your activities outdoors when some normal weenie winter snow storm (Oh!! Dear God…snow!!) blows in. What the hell is wrong with you people? What are you going to do if it snows more? Panic? Losers.

It’s really densely wet slush right now. It’s real easy to shovel right now, but, if you let if freeze tonight, it’ll be 2 inches of dense ice. Get off the internet and go shovel it before the sun goes down. At least wipe off your car.
