FLETCHER — Diane Dolde discovered Kathy LeFevre's cookbook business like many have: searching on the Internet.
"I found her by accident," Dolde of South Bend, Ind., said of her quest to find someone to produce a cookbook of tailgating recipes shared by those who hit the parking lot at football games of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Extras
The cookbook, a fundraiser for Corvilla Inc., a South Bend organization providing housing for mentally and physically handicapped adults, has sold more than 1,200 copies at $10 each.
Dolde said she was drawn to Friends and Family Cookbook Publishers because LeFevre's cookbooks include personal stories and lots of photos — beyond what other publishers do.
"I have really enjoyed working with her," Dolde said.
The tailgating book not only shared recipes of the Fighting Irish faithful — from prime rib to wieners in chili — but information on Corvilla, garnering new volunteers and supporters for the organization.
LeFevre said she's never met many of her clients, who find her on the Internet or via word of mouth. The minimum order is 50 books.
A woman celebrated the life of her 32-year-old twin who helped choose recipes and a title — "Thyme is of the Essence" — before her death from cancer.
Another by families in Oklahoma celebrated Harvest Days when wives prepare meals daily to take to men in the fields.
And, another published in late 2003 — the University of Dayton Christmas on Campus Cookbook — is a collection of Christmas recipes and traditions of the UD community
Some are for the memories, others are for fundraising.
"Many of the books are priceless. People do cookbooks for all different reasons," LeFevre said.
One recent book for the 4th Squadron of the 6th United States Calvary includes photos of members on a plane heading to Kuwait, celebrating a re-enlistment and spending time with family.
There are recipes for everything from cabbage rolls to bean salad to cheese sausage souffle and elephant stew. That's right. Recipes and Memories of Baltes Restaurant in Frenchtown, Ohio, includes a recipe calling for one elephant and four weeks of cooking time.
"People get excited about their books. They are so excited you can hardly get off the phone," LeFevre said.
