McCain draws supporters

Comment: Do you think McCain's visit will garner him support?

YELLOW SPRINGS — Despite the irony of eating ice cream on a 24-degree day, Young's Jersey Dairy was filled to capacity with about 300 people waiting to get a glimpse of GOP presidential hopeful John McCain.

As snow fell on Wednesday, Feb. 20, about 200 more supporters waited about an hour outside for McCain's arrival.

Extras

McCain wasted no time as he went inside — shaking hands on the way — to order an Eggnog Bull Shake before a short address to supporters.

McCain touched on key issues, including Ohio's importance in the election and the war in Iraq.

The senator said he opposes congressional earmarks for specialized projects, which was the most important point for Dave Price of Xenia.

"Funds would be spent better on state and local (projects)," Price said.

It was also good to hear McCain's intent to support resources for veterans with a "very generous" plan, said Price, whose 31-year-old son is on his fourth tour of duty in Iraq.

A snow day in which schools were cancelled allowed McCain supporters such as James and Kirstin Alexander of Dayton to attend the event with their children.

"We just wanted to get the children involved," James Alexander said.

Although McCain is not considered the most conservative of conservatives, the Alexanders said they have no problem with his policies.

Matthew Ames, 20, a Wright State University student, wants McCain to "help bring Republicans to a more modern neo-conservative position."

But mother and daughter Katherine and Kathy Justice, both of Fairborn, hope that McCain changes his stance on border security and illegal immigrants.

"I'm hoping he will return to more conservative policies," Katherine Justice said.

Hey Robert. Nobody cares about the age of the bottle it is the quality of the wine inside that counts. If Obama doesn’t blow up before the election he will afterwords. We have no idea if he is a decision maker. He was “present” 19 times in the senate. Why? If Obama were in the Army he would still be considered in Basic training and not ready for command. There have been many fiery orators in recent history who didn’t serve their country well; Castro,Chevaz,Vincenty Fox come to mind

On Jan 20, 2009 when our next president is sworn in Senator John McCain will be 72 years old and Senator Barack Obama will be 47. Our youngest president was Teddy Roosevelt at age 42 followed by JFK at 43 and Bill Clinton at 46. If Senator McCain were to be elected he would be the oldest individual ever to assume the office of President of the United States. I believe his age will become enough of a negative factor that he will not win the election.
