XENIA — Pastor Wesley Miller is driven to prove a little generosity and faith will go the extra mile.

That's why Miller and members of his church, Xenia Christian Center, will pay 25 cents of the price per gallon for gasoline purchased at the United Dairy Farmers on Second Street on Saturday, March 15.

"With the times we are in right now, the gas prices are very hard on people," Miller said.

Gas prices hit $3.45 per gallon in the Miami Valley March 11, and with crude oil prices more than $110 a barrel, some experts worry prices could hit $4 before the summer travel season kicks off Memorial Day weekend.

Miller said the "gas buy down" is a good way for his church members to spread the word about their upcoming Easter services and help those in need.

Church members don't necessarily mind if drivers who don't need financial help filling the tank stop by, too. "There's always that chance people will abuse it, but it's worth it," Miller said. "Truthfully, the people who are kind of greedy, we want to reach them too."

Miller isn't sure how big of a crowd to expect Saturday, but Xenia City Manager Jim Percival said police will provide traffic control if needed.

The church hopes to raise the money to pay for the outreach effort on Sunday. "I guess I'm doing it by faith," he said. "We'll raise the money. We've always been a community-minded church."

How to go: Xenia Christian Church members will pay 25 cents of the price per each gallon of gas sold from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the United Dairy Farmers, 340 W. Second St., Xenia.
