Are you a dog-person or a cat person? Taking this survey produced by a Wright State University professor could help researchers answer this question.
Here are some sample questions from the survey.

All questions in the survey are conducted on a seven point scale (1=Never true, Strongly Disagree, etc.) (7=Very true, Strongly Agree, etc.):
How much do you agree with the following statement about your dog?
• I can count on my dog to be there for me
• I miss my dog when I am away from him or her
How true are each of the following statements about you and your dog?
• I turn to my dog when I am alone or depressed
• I turn to my dog when I am disappointed
Write the number that indicates how true each statement is about you and your best friend. If you do not have contact with your best friend, leave this section blank and go on to the next section.
• I turn to my best friend when I am lonely or depressed
• I turn to my best friend when I am feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities and commitments
Write the number that indicates how much you agree with each of the following statements about your dog.
• My dog is outgoing
• My dog is lively and high-spirited
