5.2-magnitude earthquake sends rumbles across Midwest
Scientists say a more powerful quake could some day hit region
> Did you feel it?
Saturday, April 19, 2008
The 5.2-magnitude earthquake centered in Illinois that awakened people throughout the Midwest, including many in the Miami Valley at 5:38 a.m., Friday, April 18, shouldn't have surprised anyone.
Michael Hansen, coordinator of the Ohio Seismic Network run by the Division of Geological Survey of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, said an earthquake of that size occurs in Ohio or surrounding states about once a decade.
Extras
The network tracks Ohio-centered quakes, including one earlier this year, nine last year and 16 in 2006. Most were centered near Lake Erie.
"The majority of those were felt," Hansen said, noting those with a magnitude of 2.0 or above are listed on its Web site, www.dnr.state.oh.us/OhioSeis/.
John Zinck, assistant curator of geology at Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, believes smaller, more frequent earthquakes "are a good thing. It means the rocks are releasing the energy rather slowly. It's not a dramatic release."
Some seismologists have speculated the western Ohio seismic zone — which contains the entire Miami Valley — could someday generate an earthquake with a potential magnitude of 6.5 to 7.0. The state's biggest recorded earthquake, a magnitude 5.4, occurred in the village of Anna in Shelby County in 1937.
Hansen and Zinck believe a major damaging quake would be centered at the New Madrid fault line about 140 miles southeast of St. Louis, Mo.
In 1811 and 1812, it caused a series of strong earthquakes. Another could cause damage here.
"That is a real concern," Hansen said, noting it's impossible to predict if — or when — that could happen. "It could happen tomorrow or hundreds of years from now."

I was not aware we had one until my son called me. I live next to railroad tracks so I never thought of anything. But as I think about that morning I do recall the birds and my animals acting crazy around that time. The last time we felt a earthquake here in Ohio was June 10, 1987 at 7:30pm. I went into labor that night along with a lot of other women.

I had woke up for a brief moment feeling the shaking and said to myself “I wonder if thats an earthquake, no, why would it be an earthquake. It’s just the dryer!” Then later when I was getting ready for school my parents had said “Did you feel the earthquake this morning!?” I couldn’t believe that it was actually an earthquake, Northern Indiana rarely feels earthquakes. It was pretty strang for me to even think that it could have been one when I was half asleep, and that it was my first thought!

I live in Fairborn and didn’t feel yesterday’s quake, but I remember one in the ’80s while visiting with a friend in Toledo. I experienced quakes in California the Philippines, but the biggest one was Good Friday 1964 when I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB outside Anchorage, Alaska. I grew up in Texas and had never experienced an earthquake in my life. Let me tell you, that is something I will never forget, not unlike the Xenia tornado of 1974. I noticed in today’s DDN it cited Alaska 1954.????

So my son wasn’t dreaming. My last earthquake experience was…right in the middle of downtown Oakland, CA on a bus. Was it in 1989 or 1990. I forgot. But i thought we had a flat tire but then, when i felt shattered glasses were coming through the window. I quickly shut it and my goodness, there was a window washer man hanging on one of the tall building. Then, i realized we had a big earthquake. How would u feel…going through Alameda tunnel and it was extremely dark? Super scary!

I’m in Iraq so I didn’t feel a thing… ha ha! Of course I have other kinds of “tremors” to worry about here. However, my sister in Dayton wrote and told me about it. She said she is so grateful that people were talking about it because now she knows that she isn’t “crazy”. I experienced the one in 79’… cut myself shaving at the time. Yes, these things get you to realize how small we are. Good posts; I enjoyed reading them all.

I was sleeping and I thought I was dreaming. When my bed shook and woke me up and I was very shocked. Then my apartment shook again with another aftershock around 10:00 am then the electricity went out due to a line down. The lights were out for about 30 minutes. Power company got it fixed quickly for once.

From Dayton, Ohio. I was on a computer at about 5:30 am when I felt the shake & heard the “train sound” noise. I thought I was imagining at first and didn’t even realize it was an earthquake till I got to work a few hours later when everybody talked about it! I was little freaked out. I didn’t feel the aftershock 4.5.

I grew up in Miamisburg. Graduated from OSU in 1972. Moved to L.A., CA in 1975. I have been through several quakes here, including the 1991 “Northridge” “Big One.” I think that one was 6.7. You must remember; the Richter scale is logarithmic (i.e. a 6.0 is 10 times stronger than a 5.0. A 7.0 is 100 times stronger than a 5.0.). With that in mind, can you imagine what a 7.2 quake would be like? If that is what the New Madrid fault can produce, …
Good luck.

I was at work in West Carrolton and didn’t feel a thing. I was in downtown Dayton when the “aftershock” occurred and still felt nothing. Despite what the so-called experts are trying to feed us, I don’t believe this one was nearly as strong as the one back in about 79, or the one in 86. I felt both of them, and if I didn’t feel this one how could it have been as bad?

yes, I felt it and only one of my dogs actually cared. She raised her head for a second or two and that was it. I only wish that the media would pay that much attention to it. I woke up twice last night — once to an animal running back and forth on our roof (raccoon or cat?) and the second time when the whole house started shaking. My bed was shaking as if the whole thing was a gigantic cell-phone on vibrate. Outside it sounded like a train was roaring in our backyard. I tried to wake my husband up, but he didn’t wake up until after it happened … leaving me to think it was the latest extension of my morning sickness. Glad to know I’m not crazy! :)

I am orginally from California and never in my wildest dreams did I think Ohio or the Midwest ever have earthquakes! I was on the computer at about 5:30 a.m. and I felt my little Chihuahua shaking suddenly. I had the worst feeling almost surreal. I didn’t know that it was an actual earthquake here in Dayton. Then when I checked CNN.com sure enough there was my proof. Plus, since being from California I guess this was a very minor one, lol. Thank God no one was injured.

Like everyone else, I felt it too! I woke up this morning about 5 and went back to sleep before I had to get back up. As I was apparently drifting off or had just drifted off, I was jolted back awake by my bed shaking. I thought at first it was just a plane traveling too low but it got stronger. I was kind of nervous because I thought my house was going to collapse, but it subsided. I never thought I would live through an earthquake in Ohio - but I guess I was proven wrong!

I woke to a shaking bed last night which I assume is due to the earthquake. I think I probably woke up during REM or NREM stage 4 because I felt a little freaked for about 10 seconds before I decided the wind outside must just be terribly strong and immediately fell back asleep. I’m surprised it was so strong in Dayton, considering how far we are from Illinois.

I live in western Kentucky about 80 miles from the epicenter of the quake. I was awakened at 4:39 a.m. Central time when our house started shaking to the point that I thought I would be thrown out of bed. I jumped out of bed but then had to hold on the the bed post to keep my balance. I woke up this morning after my husband had left for work to funny noises in the house. I thought someone was in the house, and then it started shaking and vibrating. I thought it was storming at first, but it was clear outside. I’ve always felt there are ghosts in our house, so I thought they finally were making themselves known! I’m glad I found out it was really an earthquake or I’d still be thinking our house was possessed!

I was just on the phone with my mother who lives in southwestern KY; we were talking about the earthquake from this morning and suddenly she stopped talking mid-sentence, paused, and then said, “Oh, my gosh..I think we’re having another tremor! Dishes on my baker’s rack are rattling…!” I was in my car and couldn’t notice anything…but I suppose it’s possible that we will continue to experience a few aftershocks from this morning’s quake. =)

I live in Murray Kentucky and my family lives in Owensboro KY. I didn’t feel anything but I live in a tall dorm and live on the top floor. I did wake up and walk around at 4:35 but I don’t know why I just woke up. My family called me and felt both very strong. The first one woke them up and they got in the door frames. The second one was small.

We are rocking in St. Louis! I woke up to a shaking bed and my dog barking. The bed shook for about one and a half minutes. We just experienced another small tremor at 10:15 Central that moved back & forth unlike this morning’s up & down movement.

I woke up this morning to my bed shaking, nothing real major, more like a vibrating. I couldn’t figure out what it was. I about started to freak out. I thought someone was in the house because I kept hearing other noises too, but I just thought I was crazy and went back to sleep. When I got up I got on myspace and my friend who lives in Munci, Indiana posted something about an earthquake, that explained it. I couldn’t believe it, I never thought…earthquake in Ohio.

I felt it in Tipp City! I was sitting in a recliner reading and felt a shaking sensation. I thought “I must have the shakes this morning (I hadn’t felt well the night before).” But when I held up my hand I realized it was the chair, not me, that was shaking. Didn’t realize until I turned on Channel 2 News that it was an earthquake. I was so relieved to know I wasn’t crazy!

I live in Cinn, Green Township, approx 12miles from the Indiana border. Yes, I felt the quake. I live the foresst. Thought my husband had left the door open and a wild animal got into the house. The bed shook, mirror on the dressor banged the wall. There was a rumbling noice. I was scared to move, thinking a animal was going to get me. Afterwards, I checked my kids rooms and they both thought the other was playing games shaking each others bed. My mother in St Louis MO felt the quake

I felt it in Fairborn. I had got up too early and laid back down on the couch. It felt like the couch was swaying back and forth. I thought maybe there had been an explosion, or car accident and fell back asleep. When I woke up, I saw it on the news. Weird feeling!

I thought I was having a nightmare. But when I realized I was awake and the house was still shaking..I was freaked. Then I heard on the tv about the quake and was very happy to know I had not lost my mind! Checked my house for damage..a few things were moved around..but nothing broken!

I live in Troy, OH. I woke up about 5:35ish to a shaking bed and a rattling house. It lasted about 20 seconds or so.
Then, when it was actually time to get up this morning, I couldn’t remember if it was a dream or reality…until I turned on the news.
It was the absolute wierdest feeling in the world!
