DAYTON — Miamisburg officials outlined plans for a $17 million riverfront park that would improve access to the Great Miami River and, they hope, boost downtown economic development.
"I want Miamisburg to be a destination," said Mayor Dick Church, after describing the plan to Montgomery County commissioners on Tuesday, May 13.

"A fun place to go, make a day of it. That's my hopes and dreams for Miamisburg."
The park would be located along the river between Linden Avenue and Ferry Street. It would involve realigning the levee wall and bike path; constructing a building to house community meeting space, concessions, restrooms and a canoe and kayak rental business; and possibly installing an outdoor ice rink.
The city used $1.8 million in Clean Ohio Funds to purchase 36 of 39 properties needed for the 7.5 acre park, and hopes to get another grant to buy the final three properties. But none of the $17 million needed to build the project is in hand and a fundraising effort will be needed to raise a combination of public, private and corporate funds, Church said. If funding can be obtained it would take about five years to complete the project. Long-term the city would also like to build walking trails amid meadows and other green space on the western side of the river.
Plans call for the proposal to go to city council within two months and begin Phase One next year, said City Manager Bill Nelson. The first phase would involve constructing a new street, removing the old Miami Avenue and "greening" the area at a cost of about $4 million, he said.
