Webster Street water main break: Water service expected back soon
Friday, June 27, 2008
HARRISON TWP., Montgomery County — An early Friday morning, June 27, water main break on Webster Street near Timber Lane disrupted water service to about 60 homes and businesses in the area and created a large sink hole in the street.
Stephanie Smith, communications manager for Montgomery County Sanitary Engineering, said water service will be restored to the customers by about noon Friday, but they will be warned to boil water before consuming any today.
Smith said the hole in the street caused by the break will be repaired by 2 p.m., and normal traffic will be able to resume at that time.
A Montgomery County Sheriff's dispatch supervisor said deputies were called to the scene at 2:51 a.m. to deal with traffic problems created by the rushing water.
Smith said deputies notified county personnel that water under pressure was gushing up through the broken pavement on Webster Street and pooling several inches deep at the curb nearby. The water also flooded nearby yards and driveways.
Sanitary engineering crews eventually were able to shut off nearby valves to cut the flow of water to the broken pipe. Smith said the 10-inch water supply pipe that broke had been installed in the early 1950s, and its age might have been a factor in causing the break.
