CENTERVILLE — As of today, July 1, gamers of all ages can check out best selling video games, free of charge, from Washington-Centerville Public Library.

This new collection offers users access to games compatible with the four most popular console platforms: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii and will feature current games like Kung Fu Panda, Madden NFL 08, Iron Man and Guitar Hero as well as some older favorites like Sonic Heroes and Final Fantasy.

"Our library strives to be on the leading edge of library service," said library director Cindi Klinck. "The fact that we are one of only four libraries in Ohio, and the first in Montgomery County, to offer our users video games, is testament to that commitment."

The library tries to anticipate the needs of the public.

"We actively look for new ways to help educate, enrich and entertain by offering new formats and services to keep our library vibrant and relevant to today's lifestyle," said technical and information services manager, Margaret Maddox.

According to data released by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) in January, 2008, computer and video game companies posted record sales in 2007, proving that more than ever people are looking to gaming as a form of entertainment and even a way to support learning. Recent studies have shown playing videos games increases spatial visualization and motor skills and engaging with games teaches critical thinking, problem solving, strategic thinking, and other complex skills in a way that traditional teaching methods cannot.

These statistics, along with several recent patron requests, supported the library's decision to develop a circulating video game collection.

The library will carry two broad categories of games: family video games, which are intended for every age level, and general video games, which are intended for older players, age 10 and older, and teens. The library will not carry adult-only games. The games are available for one-week loan, with one renewal, and can be returned to either library location.
