SPRINGFIELD — One person was found dead in a home at 204 N. Greenmount Ave. Wednesday afternoon, July 2, according to police.

Mark D. Burwell, 30, who resides at the same address, was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated murder hours after police were alerted of the body. Officers declined to release the victim's identity until relatives have been identified.

Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody also did not release the time of death or the manner in which the victim died.

Initial reports were that someone was fatally shot, and a man at the scene said he heard loud noises that sounded like gunshots Tuesday evening.

"I heard a bunch of noises like fireworks. Then a bunch of people were arguing and yelling," said neighbor Kenneth Wolfe.

Four people were taken into custody for questioning before Burwell was charged with murder.

Police closed off Warder Street, between Florence Street and North Greenmount Avenue while investigators work the scene.
